Post subject:  HID headlight conversion.
Once the 1275 I have is done and installed, a HID headlight conversion will be my next mission. There's one here http://www.hidplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?45526-TL-Bi-xenon-in-7-quot-round-housing-on-a-Classic-Mini. I'm not sure if anyone here has attempted this, but if you have I'd love hear of any pitfalls or tips you have to share.

Not legal to retro-fit them to a car here.
If you want that intense white look, just go for some xenon h4 x100s or something.

That guys conversion is interesting with the reflector painted black.

If it was me i would get one of the bulb conversion kits , not try to fit in a whole projector like that guy did. Something like this style kit would be easier. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-55W-H4-3 ... 7e1&_uhb=1 . As far as i am aware you would just need to make sure your headlight reflector was metal, not plastic . As i think they might melt the plastic ones.

As for the legal thing. My opinion is that i see far more dangerous things on cars these days so if you are willing to risk the legal thing, its your choice.
Just make sure they are adjusted properly and not pointing up into the trees at the possums at night. :wink:

Edit. But personally, i wouldnt do it. :)

I've done it, but I don't recommend it.

They're the globe replacement set up and are on my van which is rarely driven at night. I only put them on for a midnight run to Brisbane a few years ago.

The glare from the road signs reflecting back at you is way too intense but I have to say that their great on the open road.
They mustn't be to bad for other drivers though as I've never been flashed. Funny though, I flash others with HID conversions if their not adjusted right.
If you really want HID, get a pair of driving lights, better still, try what Harley suggests.

But they do look cool, and I love the way they fire up when you first flick the switch. :wink:

Why would flashing your lights at them catch their attention? lol. I think if they have HID's improperly fitted then they are ignorant to the point they wouldn't know why they are being flashed. Or they don't care in the first place.

I literally feel like smashing peoples lights when they have HID's or drive around with fog lights on.

I also think that they are totally unnecessary in the first place. Unless you are driving in the middle of woopwoop then sealed beams or h4's are fine.


Well that's my rant, so if you are going to use HID's just don't :D That link seems like maybe he has achieved a result which wouldn't drive me insane, but your average install should be a no go.

People say they are not legal..

Is there an RTA bulletin or something similar saying such? I have heard lots of people say they are but never seen a link to a law saying such.

Besides the ADR's have you ever looked through the rubbish mail for autobahn etc and seen a HID kit on sale? It will say in small print "for off-road use only"

This leads back to my previous comment that people with HID's are either ignorant or jerks. *unless ADR compliant!

Lol maybe my words are a bit strong but it a fairly serious matter.

I believe you ride motorbikes yes? Well say for example you are riding your bike along a road and there is some debris or a pot hole and your headed straight for it. Unfortunately there is a car with HID's coming your way and with the light shining in your eyes you don't see the hazard to avoid it. Bad things follow. All because someone thought it would be cool to replace their bulbs with HID's. They might as well be driving around with highbeam on


Fair enough you rarely drive the car at night, and you put them in for long distance night driving. But that seems to me like the same as not having windscreen wipers because you don't intend on driving in the rain, except your affecting other road users.

I can only speak for NSW in which case HID lights,

Cannot be retro fitted,
Must be self leveling,
Must be self cleaning

They are a fantastic light for YOU and absolute crap for anyone else driving towards you. I think if you want to get really technical you can digest ADR's for the biblical version.

What HIDs can beat 4 x Hella Rallye 4000 series spotlights with 100W bulbs in them? That's 400W of ungodly light.

Seriously if you need that much light, look at the above setup. Last time I was in a car with these bad boys, it was like daytime driving... apparently can also take HID conversions too.

Legal? just don't turn them on until you are in the bush...

i remember looking into them out of curiousity (not for a mini), and the design for the projectors is interesting. Its definitely not just a swap over deal, the reflection and direction of light is very important. Then all the self levelling, self cleaning (I assume to stop refraction) stuff on top makes it basically impossible to get them to work the same without spending a lot of time and effort into it (and then they aren't allowed to be retrofitted anyway!).

Buy better globes. If you want to make a statement then make your lights super clean/clear and integrate some angel eyes
