Post subject:  Recovery tank
Hi
Where would be the best place be to fit a recovery tank for the cooling system?

The only place I can find to put it is on the back of the grill, there's no other space in my engine bay. Does the tank have to be as high as the top of the rad?
It's a brass mg midget tank.

I am planning on putting one in mine but I haven't looked at the position for it yet.
You need to change your rad cap to a recovery type cap. Ideal you like it up nice and close to the rad but as long as the hose you run to the recovery tank is always below the fluid level in the recovery tank it should work. The longer the hose the further the fluid has to travel and it's not as effective as a close one I was almost going to investigate putting it in the left hand inner guard. It would be a bit of a pain for topping up and and checking the level but there is some spare space in there and space in a mini is the hard thing to find.

As Simon said , the normal place to put them is on the firewall , next to the wiper motor.
Check where mini mokes , and Morris 1100's have them as standard .

There's not a lot of room up there when you have twin carbs, a booster and hydro. So I sneak mine up under the guard on the radiator side. I put a pair of bolts through just under the parcel shelf into the guard space and put the strap on those two bolts. There's a neatly placed hole the right size for the hose to fit just above the suspension tower bolts. It's not as hard as it looks to get to. And you set it once and forget it for the rest of the year. Thirteen years and counting if you're worried about stones.

How large should the recovery tank be in mililiter's/litre etc ?

Pretty sure mines about 1 1/2 litre but as long as its big enough to hold what the rad wil push out when its hot and resupply when its cold would be fine. at a guess 1/2 a litre of fluid with the same sort of air gap should be about right.

Thanks for that , do you need a special ahh container or would a spare window washer bottle do ? " like have them side by side , or are they the wrong material for coolant that hot ? ?

I know guys that have used a raised out gatorade bottle. So no not really you would just have to plug the washer bottle where the washer motor goes.

Not sure mate id say if it can handle boiling water fom the kettle it should be ok and sit some coolant in it for a few days and see what happens mind you iv seen a few coke bottles used as expansion tanks over the years so it should bo ok :-)
