I'm away from home so can't check. Are ball joint shims big enough to be used as shims for pre-loading a set of tapered rollers on a 997 Disc brake (ie Drum brake) CV and drive flange? I have picked up a set of EBC greens for the diminutive little discs. I wonder how it will go...or stop... |

Nope the CV shaft is 1.250"(31.75mm). A balljoint shim is only 29mm bore. ![]() |

Where do you pick them up from? Or I suppose I will need to hand cut a few shims... |

You don't usually shim bearings on a 997, a tapered roller kit should go straight in and work with the spacer in the kit. But yeah if the bearings are aftermarket, & have a 1/2 spacer on and it's too tight when assembled, I can see you might want a shim. I machined some thick spacers up once, can send you one and you can face it off in a lathe there as needed if that helps. PM sent. |

Yeah they're the aftermarket variety, and the seal rings are new as well. but it's still a little too tight for my liking. I might try hand linishing the spacer a little. I've got a unimat lathe for some hobby work I'm keen to set up. |

If you linish the spacer thinner it will be TIGHTER!!! ![]() They need to be dead parallel too.... bit hard on a linisher. |

Oh...your right..oops. Shims or wider spacer it is! These bearings have a seperate spacer to the bearing, like the Timkens. One side is fine, the other is a little tight at the Drum CV nut specified torque. |

Let me guess- noname ones in a blue box? ![]() That's why I made thicker spacers... I needed them. Genuine Timken kits give no probs unless the web in the hub is worn. |

If you know someone who has a collection of the spacers go through them all with some verniers and you might find a thicker one. I've done that recently to solve the problem. |

I have quite a collection, if you can give me the actual thickness you need. If not I can machine one of my specials to width. |
