Hi all probably a silly question but what is the shell made out of.

Is it mild steal? or a composite of something else?

Thanks

Don't believe it. They were just a Deluxe or K shell with gold plated S bits and S holes attached.

I think it is mild steel for most parts, But I think in the deep draw pressings the metal may be a little different
I would think Dr Mini would know A lot more about the types of metals used

I have an impeccable source that the steel varies in thickness from part to part (e.g. the battery box is .031 and .035, tank mounting bracket is .049 and the body slinging brackets are .064) and some of the steel at least came from Lysaghts.

Doc - do you know what these codes are that appear after the thickness and word steel in the specification?

CR DQ NT
or A.S. 616 CR3/GP/NT
or CR CQ

A simple Google seems to show CR - cold rolled, CQ - commercial quality and AS 616 is probably the Australian Standard in the 1960's / 70's. Don't know about the others.

Anyway, to answer the original question, the body shell is made of STEEL. :)
