Post subject: | Alloy head has dropped a valve seat |
Hi, had a call from a guy who wants to sell me an alloy 5 port head. Trouble is he lives far away and i wouldnt be able to inspect it in person before buying it. Dont know what make the head is. He said it was from Minisport All i know is the head was fitted to a 1380 race engine run on av-gas. He tells me one of the seats has come out and all i would need to do is get it put back in and away i go. Because it has come out already is this going to be a re-occurring problem? Looking for anyone who can shed any more light on this subject for me? also any other problems to look out for with 5 port alloy heads Thanks, Claeten |

Most of the 5 and 7 port alloy heads are made by Pierce Castings in the US regardless of who is selling. Poorly fitted seats are common. Not hard to rectify. You'd really need to see how much damage the seat did to the valve & head |

You just need to remove the inserts and shrink fit them properly. I'm considering going for bigger valves while I'm at it. |

I would be careful - and ask for some decent photos of the outcome first. I bought an 1275GT motor that had had seats fitted - and one had fallen out. The consequences for the relevant piston and combustion chamber were not pretty.... The block was fine with a new piston - but the head was passed on as not worth the bother.... Valve seats are a LOT harder than alloy..... Cheers, Ian |

make sure they're stuck in good - this is what happened when my S head dropped a seat... more than just a replacement piston |
