Hey guys, another strange question that hopefully someone can shed some light on. I have a beeping noise in my 98 Rover mini, normally happens at lower revs and within say 20 mins after first driving it for the day. It comes from the dash and I dont believe it is the stereo as that is powered off. The beep will be about half a second or so and may do it half a dozen times. Sometimes the beep is cut short as if the sensor or whatever is only just registering also.
Any ideas?? Brake warning, SRS airbarg?? The previous owner couldn't figure it out either.

Its a definite electronic/digital beep if this helps. Def not a squeal.

Have you got a Japanese tolling device installed in the car?
I have one in my rover and it beeps and talks to me in Japanese sometimes.

Catalytic converter overheat.
It's the only thing the factory fitted (to some jap cars) that has a beeper/ buzzer on it.

Do you know where the sensor reading is taken from the cat over heat? I have no wires coming out of my cat.

Correct.
There's a few different variants found in the jap cars depending on year, but generally speaking theres a sensor 6 inches after the cat that goes up therough the floor to a control box linked to a buzzer or a light.
Not all the jap cars had them. The frontcut I nicked the engine from for my car didnt have one, but the spare wiring loom I bought (same year car) did have one.

How do I fix this? Why would the catalytic converter overheat anyway?
Gonna order some bits from mini spares so can I order anything while I'm at it to fix it

if the car isn't regularly given a good thrashing, they can fill with gunk and block up - will glow white hot after a while...

Will I'll be glad to give the car a good trashing if this fixes it but it doesn't sound like it could be the problem as its only happening after staring the car and warming up.

The term overheat is used, but generally it can mean its just failed from age too.
Catalytic converters are only good for a number of years, yours will be at least 15 years old.

Seriously - the easiest way to fix it is to disconnect the thing. You can't pull the fuse as it runs off the AC circuit (for some stupid reason).
The buzzer is either under the dash on the drivers side, under the drivers seat, or behind the dash. Just unplug it.
No mechanics in this country would know it wasn't working, since most minis don't have them anyway.
I think they stopped fitting them around mid 1998 onwards anyway, you must have one of the last ones.

No Mechanic in this country know about these! NOT till they read this any way.
