Post subject:  Mini boot badge question

hi all,

Just a general question really...

What are the MINI and MINI COOPER etc metal boot badges made from? Are they able to be welded/soldered or brased?

I think they are `pot metal'. The composition varies but much of it is zinc.

It means if you solder or braze you will then need to re chrome. I think it is so much cheaper to contact our friends at Minispares UK and buy new ones. Re chroming something like that will cost more than a new one.

The zinc makes it pretty much a waste of time to work on. Also called mazac. Not sure if you can braze it but I doubt it. You probably won't be able to rechrome it with any success.

I've never tried it, but you can probably solder it with alumiweld or similar. Likwise it can be replated (although its a specialist field). Why would you bother?

Just glue it together with panel bond if you don't want to buy new ones.. I'd be doing the latter

If beyond repair, put a wanted ad up. Someone here will have what you want.

I know someone who used to make such items from stainless steel. I believe the last items were replacement Superleggera badges for an Aston...

I think Minispares might be cheaper..

Cheers, Ian

Haha.. I make Mini . Matic rear badge dots which are NLA. I use 310 S/S & polish em. Why 310?? Coz I've has some bits of bar here for 20 years.

ps. These dots are rare as S parts, but if anybody needs one made, I'm cheap.

the dot and matic badge has been taken off my car too by the previous owner after swapping out the auto... was thinking of making a custom badge myself, one of these days :/

When the factory wanted to make a new badge, or a one-off they made the master by hand out of brass, one letter at a time. Then soldered or brazed the pieces together. I have an old Cooper badge and you can see the outline of the brazing and that one of the Os is slightly out of alignment.

Why go to that trouble in this day and age? Model it on a computer then have a wax copy printed, invest and cast in bronze.

Or you could have it printed in stainless then polish it heavily, although its pretty hard and will have ridges from the printing.

Personally I'd cast it in bronze or aluminium, polish and clear coat it.
