I have a remote box that has been cleaned out at some stage an not re-oiled, there is surface rust on the gearset, is this an issue?

Wire brush the teeth- if not pitted is not an issue, IMO.

Thanks for the info doc, additionally I'm having trouble identifying this remote box as there is no number on the lay shaft.

Case number is 22g1128.

Open centre diff, came of a 998.

1. What output drive flanges/yokes does it have?
Flat face with 4 holes = Cooper S or GT or Moke probably.
Rubber uni joints = Mini K or 1098 Clubby etc.
Pot joints- somebody has fitted them since manufacture.

2. Count the teeth on the 1st motion shaft (small gear that drives the cluster gear)- 18T = Cooper S or GT, 17T = Mini K or 1098 Clubby etc.

Thanks doc, turns out to be a standard k box, so someone's swapped the 1098 for a 998 at some stage.

What's the most worthless gearbox? I am making a table from a small bore and the last piece I need is a gearbox housing, problem is I'm half Scottish and it doesn't sit right using a 4 synchro remote box for the job. I have a pudding stirrer somewhere and a rod change? Are these less worthy of reservicing?

If you are interested in selling the Mini K box I will buy it, depending on the price. I have a spare rod change housing with some internal damage which may suit your needs.

Most worthless gearbox IMO is the early 850 one which had the `Morris Minor' cone synchros..
