Post subject:  Sandblasting costs

Just wondered what kinds of prices people have paid to get subframes blasted? I went to two local places today and was a bit taken aback when they both quoted $300 for blast-only. Is this what would be considered a fairly standard cost in peoples experience?

I paid $60 a subframe including primer!!! It was $50 each for just sandblasting.

That's more like what I was expecting. One place had no idea what I meant when I said I wanted two subframes blasting so his quote was based on pictures on my phone and I assumed he'd just plucked a figure from nowhere. The other place actually had a pair of mini subframes in, waiting to be blasted so his quote was based on what he'd quoted on this job.

So they wanted $300 for just sandblasting 2 mini subframes....... DAMN , i would take one in and show them the size surely they would'nt take long to do.

For $300 i'd reckon you could buy the supercheap auto sandblaster gun and a compressor lol " just tell your missus your making a sandpit for the kids :-) "

I'm tossing up the idea of getting my own rig if I can't get cheaper quotes than $300. Considering the amount of other bits and pieces I would eventually end up doing then it wouldn't be a wasted investment.

In terms of taking the parts in, like I said in my original post, one of the guys actually had a pair of mini subframes on a palette waiting to be done so he knew exactly what I wanted doing. I dread to think what he'd charge for blasting a full bodyshell

I never thought it would be so dear , maybe just buy some paint stripper and thick gloves , or better still take them to a powder coating place and get a quote as they will clean them anyway before coating ?

I dropped front and rear off this morning at a grit blaster here in SA.
He has quoted $100 for both including degreasing and priming.
He can do it in 24hrs (or on the day if needed).
I noticed a completed set of front and rear subframes awaiting collection when I was there!

$100 is ok but if I was quoted $300 I'd be looking around at DIY stuff!

Yep, $100-$120 primed is around what I was expecting for both so these two fellas either didn't want the work or it's just more pricey around here. I've grabbed a few more details out of the phone book and will try them tomorrow but if it stays around the $300 mark then I could well be in the market for a new compressor.
