Post subject:  Twin Fuel Tanks - Do they level out?

Got a question about the twin tank set up. I'm having trying to map out what i'm thinking so if it doesn't make sense its not intentional.

If i just use the standard speedo that shows the fuel level am I getting a correct reading from what is left in both tanks? Meaning - If the level is reading half have i got half of the capacity of both of the tanks or half of the capacity of the tank with the sender on it?

I guess the real question is - do the tanks level out? If i fill up the left tank and not the right will it say i have half capacity left, which is not really the case?

Whilst typing I have raised another concern. Because Striped is going to be fool injected and if the tanks don't level out that creates the possibility of air getting in the lines. F/ing the pump and.or the injectors.....

Anybody able to shed any light?

I think the theory is they are supposed to level out through the balancer pipe..but it takes a while..

Sorry, not much help..

On level ground they level out. If car is tilted they level, but will not be equal- fuel gauge reads whatever level in LH tank is.

Note: If parking car severely tilted,
1. You want good caps that seal.
2. The breather pipes on the top of tanks must each cross to other side of car. If not it can drain to lowest tank, then siphon fuel to ground....

Balancer pipe hey? which one is that? The one at the bottom that goes into the T piece?

And if they be balancing does that mean the return line from the fuel rail can just go into one of the tanks?

Can you elaborate on this Doc? I don't quite get what you mean.....Note - There are no pipes coming from the top of either of my tanks.

The `balance pipe' pipe is the RH feed pipe to tee.
Yes the return can go back to 1 tank, but it might be an idea to make RH tank's feed pipe bigger..

Why's that?

Look inside boot- there is a spud fitting right at top of each tank pointing to centre of car. There should be 2 black pvc? pipes on there, on an S, they cross each other under parcel tray..
Then they exit thru boot floor, near battery cable and fuel line to pump.

On a single tank Mini, it exits near the fuel line, doesn't go across the car.

Must be smelly in your car with no breather hoses..

Why's that?

Because the return flow might exceed the balance flow (which is powered by gravity..)

Ok so i need to fit a pipe to connect the two black PVC's?

NO... they are separate, 1 from each tank, so 2 breathers thru boot floor.

You've lost me again. What's the difference between the return flow and the balance flow?
