The center bearing thrust washer on my 1100S block has been modified by a previous engine builder.
On one side (front I think) the thrust washer 'housing' lip has been worn/machined off so their was nothing to hold the thrust in place. The solution they came up with was to drill and dowel the thrust to the block. The engine was working with this mod but my question or concern is, is this a suitable way to locate the thrust washer?
Any ideas or suggestions on this issue?

If it's on the fan side of the centre main, I'd say it's OK. Hardly any thrust there. If it's on the clutch side though I'd be finding another block...
1275 blocks are not getting rare.... except S ones.

I think it's on the oil pump side.

Another way-
You could get that thrust face remachined deeper that side only, then use +.030" thrusts. These are still available (ACL brand, made in Oz) from Karcraft and others.

Their is still a tiny lip left but not enough to do the job. Also is the dowel up the top ment to be their :?: it's on both sides of the center cap.

The slot in the cap is normal to locate the thrust washer, but not the dowel.

I'd be pulling another block off the pile in the corner...

I bet that worn face shown is not flat. There are ways to fix it properly, but they all involve machining, spending more than another block is worth.

Bearing shells look pretty stuffed too, and in an odd way. I wonder what the crank alignment is like.

Happens when people fit the thrusts in backwards, the crank wears the thrust out so it's thin, then the thrusts falls out, crank gets intimate with the block... et voila.

There is a way that you can save the block and reuse it...............it involves the following.
Sand blast block, paint it nicely, put piece of 100mm glass on top...........bingo, new coffee table for lounge.
Now all you have to do is convince the Mrs, it looks great.

If I try this method what is the std thickness of the center main web :?:
and by my calculations this will only give it a 1mm lip at most (.7mm + the tiny lip that is still on the block) will that be enough :?:

Probably not, if you get any wear after fitting.
I would be inclined to machine it back another 1.5mm and take the lip off, then screw and dowel a thick plate on there, then machine into that to give standard width, with an original size lip.
As I said in my last post above, this would probably cost you more than another block would. I have a couple of good std bore 1275 auto blocks if you are interested.
