Post subject:  Import mini to Australia

Hi Everyone

Just joined up to this forum as I am moving to Melbourne in July and planning on bringing my mini with me.

I will do this using the Personal import scheme. Has anyone on here done the same and have any advice/tips?

Cheers
Darren

Here are some pics of my mini:

G'day Darren,

Firstly, great move!

As for the personal import scheme, from all I've heard this is a good way to go. I'm sure I have heard of one or two people that have done this, and as soon as I recall who the hell they were, I'll link them up here (if they don't beat me to it?).

The other advice I'll give you is to join up with the Victorian Mini Club. A great club with around 900 members and plenty of activity whether you like motor sport, social stuff, club runs, anything really.

They meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at a place in the inner Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, however with all the other club activity, if club meetings aren't your thing, then theres plenty of other chances to catch up with people who have similar interests to you?

If you PM me your address I'll post you a club mag or two so you can get a feel for what it's all about?

Also the website is worth a visit here

Cheers, best wishes and good luck for your move,

Dave

Edit: Corrected misinformation re meeting week

Yep, i did it in 2005. I've written it up a couple of times, probably better for me to find those posts to recap rather than recall from memory 7-8 years ago.

Thanks for the positive comments on the car. It has taken me 6 years to get it to this stage, thats why I really don't want to leave it behind in the UK.

It is expensive to ship and I think there will be import duty to pay on it plus getting the rego etc. I will just have to take the hit on that.

This site is very useful and outlines pretty much what I have to do to get the permission to import the vehicle.

Will definitely come down and check this out. I will not know anyone when landing in Melbourne so the more chances I have of meeting people the better. I spent January this year in Melbourne and visited as any suburbs as I could to get familiar with the area.

Any links/info you can dig up would be great. What I cant really find any info on is what I have to do when I get the car into Oz

Cheers
Darren

What year is the car? It'll effect how easy / hard it can be.

The car was registered in 96. I know pre 89 cars are easier for general importing. I was hoping on a personal import the year would not be as important.

Very nice mini. I am going to be importing my mini in September from London to Melbourne via the personal import scheme and have looked into it . Once you have the number of points for the import permit and provide them with all the relevant docs and satisfy the 12 month ownership rule prior to it arriving in Aus its pretty straight forward getting it there. I am putting mine in a 40ft container as we are shipping my wife’s car as well. What I am interested in is did you find out or does anyone know apart from fitting the child restraint mounts what else might need to be done for the SVA rules to get it reged.
