 Post subject: undoing tight sump plug

Can anyone tell me the direction to undo the oil sump plug.
the previous oil change was tightened too much and i don't wanna tighten anymore trying to undo it. anti clockwise right??

It's a normal screwthread - to rotate anti-clockwise looking at the head.

It is preferable to use a ring spanner or a socket. There is insufficient room to use an open end spanner (or a shifter!!) properly.

i don't have a socket set. have been trying a 15/16 ring spanner but can't get very good grip and slips off

If I were you I'd get a new sump plug (and copper washer) before doing your oil change.
Put the newies in together. If you round the hex a bit each time you'll have an issue later on.

Sounds like the plug is rounded off a tad....you may need some serious help from Mr Welder or Mr Cold Chisel ONLY after you have bought a new plug and washer tho....

Borrow a socket and bar, ring spanners often have a dirty big chamfer in them which doesn't grip a bad sump plug well.

Or buy/borrow a single hex socket and breaker bar. Using the single hex will help if it is a bit rounded it gets a better grip. You may need to tap it on with a hammer if it is rounded.

As others have said buy a new plug and washer. I always do sump plugs up with a ring spanner, it gives yo a good feel and you are less likely to over tighten it then if you use a ratchet.

I had that conundrum! Either buy a cheap socket set or a good quality 15/16 Spanner. I chose the later as I wanna start collecting some tools. Might see if the mechanic down the road will loosen it enough to take off with spanner when I get home.
