Ribena is refusing to co-operate and run well, like a good little mini. I am sure that the timing is spot on.......rockers are set at 12 thou cold, which only leaves the carby. Partially stripped that today, put it back together with new ATF in the dash pot, went for a drive and no difference..... It runs real good at idle, but refuses to respond immediatly when the accellerator is pushed down. Andout on the road, it's carrying on like insufficient fuel or timing out of whack. So, what should I try next? |

Maybe a chance you've got a dud coil? They typically show faults like you suggest when the car is given some load. But I'm certainly no expert. |

Given what you've checked I'm with the others I'd be checking the ignition side maybe plugs , leads or coil. If they are failing that will give similar symptoms to what you are having. |

Check the resistance off the plug leads and coil lead, if any over 2K ohm I'd bin em. I like Bosch inductive core ones, they don't deteriorate like carbonized string leads (cheap Top Gun etc). |

Yep....reckon its got to be something electrical. When the rebuild was done, it had...... new plugs new leads new dizzy cap new points new rotor button new condensor But I did re-use the coil, which was about 4 or 5 years old. Today, I'll try another coil and put in some fresh fuel. The annoying part is that since the re-build, I've only done about 500 Km....it did go well, like a rocket in fact but we all know, things break down when you least expect them to. I want to change the oil and filter too so I had better get out there ![]() |

Mine ran like a heap of shite and couldn't for the life of me work out the issue- Gave it to an auto elec and turns out there was a voltage drop at the coil, had to wire in a relay. The symptom was narrowed down to an orange spark, not a blue one. |

Right.......progress report.......old fuel, all drained out and fresh fuel in. Distributor removed and points removed - replaced after cleaning but like I said, it's only done about 500Km so there was very little to clean up on the points. Thought I had an old coil in the garage.....no, so I've stuck with the old one and will get another in a few days time Ok, there's a marked improvement but still missing at high speeds so I'll look at the coil next. |

Check what the plugs look like now. if black or oily, light up the oxy/gas stove/camp stove/BBQ/blowtorch and burn the crud off the insulators. When almost red heat, the crap will go `ping' and insulators will be clean as new. Beats sand blasting plugs like us oldtimers used to do. ![]() |

Just to throw a variable in to the mix.........when I originally bought my mini, it had a 998 engine with a 1.5 SU carb. Since then, I'm now on the second rebuilt engine which happens to be a 1098 but I'm still using the same 1.5 SU carby. I've noticed that the needle is ADF.........shouldnt this be a AN or E3 ??? |

Have you checked for excessive wear in the throttle shaft? This would give you a vacuum leak, which would cause poor performance, worse under load. I always find the hs4 su' seem to wear faster. |
