Hi All,

has anyone used Fabre/SU Midel to overhaul their SU Carb?

I have put a kit through mine but i think the shaft bushes are a little worn, but before i commit to them for the $300 odd dollar rebush and service kit (service Kit out of UK last time for the HIF Turbo carb was around $80 bucks) so its not too bad a price i guess.

anyone got reports of their work?

or i can get this

Ive done both, had SU Midel service a carb, and rebuilt my own.

I always felt it was an AWFUL lot of money for very simple work. The only challeng part of overhauling a carb is overdrilling the spindles to accept the white metal bushes. Saying that it only takes a gentle hand or asking a machinest to do it for you. The only real trick is making sure you push the bushes in all the way through to the carb throat and then using a fine file to get them to match the curvature of the throat to prevent air getting past the spindle.

I've rebuilt every carb I have owned ever since. You are rewarded with a perfect tuning carb, and a car that stays tuned.

Thanks for the feedback Mick, do you know if they sell the bushes to public?

Thanks Grant

Can the bushes be purchased loose? yes.

I THINK I picked up bushes from minispares, but may be mistaken. I usually buy the complete kit because I will baseline the whole carburettor if I am going to the trouble of rebuilding it.

I like them shiny so I blast the lot and plate the loose bits, but is it absolutely necessary....no.....but it looks special.

Always wondered about drilling out for new bushes, is there a chance you can drill off centre ? coz the original holes can be quite oval. If they are off centre wouldn't the butterflies not close properly ?

The butterfly can be adjusted in the shaft (a bit) because the 2 screw holes are BIG.

Sometimes I have found that the bushes have not quite lined up perfectly when I have pushed them in. This makes the shaft a little stiff initially. All it takes to fix this is to spin the correct size drill through the bushes to take a high side off.

It doesn't affect the hole size, just the high point of an imperfection.

I just dragged out the receipt and they overhauled and adjusted the carbi, repaird the throttle action, repaird the choke and fitted an inline fuel filter. Parts included a repair kit, 5/16 x 3/8 bush, metering pin, t/disc 1.5 su, screws, filter, clapm, hose. Labour was 2 hours ($100 per hour). Total cost = $321.90 inc GST.

Car ran and continues to run awesome. :D
