Folks,
Wondering if I've got the inner and outer syncro hubs oriented properly?
Also do the s'lector forks and reverse gear appear to be assembled correctly?
(Should've taken more disassembly photos!).

Folks, Wondering if I've got the inner and outer syncro hubs oriented properly? Also do the s'lector forks and reverse gear appear to be assembled correctly? (Should've taken more disassembly photos!).

The 1st/2nd synchro hub (top photo) is wrong, the inner is wrong way round. 3rd/4th hub is correct and the selector forks also look correct, tho I haven't done a rod change for a while. Way to remember the orientation of the synchro hubs is that the long side of the inner goes with the long side of the outer (where the selector forks run). Can see this for the 3rd/4th hub (second photo). |

Matt, I've just rebuilt my pre A+ rod box about 2 weeks ago, took me ages to figure out 1st/2nd inner outer. I eventually called Matt Read "TheMiniMan"! Justminis sums it up....as TheMiniMan told me! It's the same for the 1st/2nd as 3rd/4th, only the long side of the inner on 1st/2nd is not as obvious as 3rd/4th. Cheers Shane |

Well I've got the basic box reassembled, but wonder if I've got a problem. Hand shifting (by pushing on the syncro hubs) reveals an increase in resistance with each gear change. Should it be easy to turn over by hand in each and every gear? I have been stingy with the oil on assembly; could it just need a sump full of oil? Thanks a lot. Matt |

Have you torqued up the 3rd motion input & pinion nuts? With them loose as Matt says, 3rd gear syncro will grab. If they're torqued, then it makes sense you get more resistance with each gear selected. Think about what the gearbox / torque multiplier does, same as your old 10 spd pushy, in 1st gear, easy to turn the crank with your hand from stand still, in 10th gear heaps harder to turn the crank by hand from stand still! Input and pinion nuts torqued up. Was wondering about the torque multiplier effect, maybe its just that. Matt, What would cause 3rd syncro to be grabby? It does have new baulk rings. Thanks... |

With no oil in the box, the force of putting it into gear can make the baulk ring stick temporarily to the gear. This is normal, it just means the taper on each part matches perfectly. This is often not the case with current aftermarket baulk rings; I have some new ones here that are not only the wrong taper angle but are oval as well.  [edit] I did buy them a while ago...

Thanks Doc, that's good to know. I got these ones from MED, as I was getting an A+ layshaft from them at the same time. They promised me they were good, and maybe they are! |

Well I've just resolved the problem I had; which was a grabby fourth baulk ring. No idea what the cause was, as they was supposedly good quality MED jobbies, and all measured up roughly the same, but swapping it out for one of the old ones sorted it out. Now turns over quite nicely in each gear and nootral. I wasn't going to mess around swapping all the baulk rings around looking for a result - just took the option which I thought most likely to allow me to progress! |

Nice find Matt. 4th syncro doesn't get a huge work out as compared to 1st & 2nd, so a good 2nd hand syncro should be well up for the job! Cheers Shane |

That's also my reckoning Shane. Still can't quite work out WHY that baulk ring could be trouble, but it was, so that's all I NEED to know. Hope to get power plant back in on monday. Been off the road a month, and I miss it, esp. now that the cooler weather is with us! |
