ausmini :: View topic - First gearbox rebuild = so confused

Okay so I'm rebuilding a remote gearbox I had sitting in the shed.(No idea of the history or condition of it) It will be for my 1380 engine which I am hoping to eventually build up to the 100hp mark. The box currently on it was rebuild at the same time as the engine about 5 years ago. I couldn't fault it at all apart from the fact it was a sloppy rod change, standard gear ratio and I wanted to put a 3.7 diff in it.

So basically I was thinking of pulling down the remote box keeping the 3.7 crownwheel and pinion from it. Putting the gear set from my rebuilt rod change in it and changing the first motion and lay gears to s ratio. Does this sound right or will it not be a straight forward swap over of the gear set from the rod box to remote?

You will have to use the Reverse Idler gear from your Remote Box. Also selector forks and rods. All else is as you expect. Dave

Okay cool. I've found a s ratio lay gear but I don't have the first motion s ratio shaft. Anyone know he avalibility of these for pre a plus boxes? Also what are the advantages of a cross pin diff for a road car?

With that 1st motion shaft being a 18mm not a 14mm (pre a+) would that involve changing to a a+ main shaft

Any info on the mini spares cross pin diff? Just a lot stronger with less tendency to torque steer? Worth the money?

they are a tad stronger in a sense,,, they`re designed to share the load better across 4 planetary gears instead of the std 2 & they also (inherant in the design) share the load across 2 pins instead of the std only being one cross-pin so yeah they have a value for street use for sure... & are pretty well priced really compared to the cost & time & energy & & & attempting to fully overhaul a std diff,,, even trying to find a good condition std carrier is hard these days so , i think the 4-pin is good value if you were going to do any track days then i`d suggest a Quaiffe diff

I know that people in the know are not to in love with the new age gearsets and parts, but what is the specific difference between a gear machined in the BMC days and one you can buy new? For instance the new 1st motion shafts, or the SCCR gear sets? Do they wear out the gear faces early?
