The stock ones are made of a heavily bituminous card. They're like a 1/8th paper material heavily soaked in a waterproof resin. I've seen a few cars with gasket paper in there and it usually isn't a pretty sight after a little while as the paper comes apart. The hinge gaskets aren't too expensive however.

Rubber ones are out there, I think they look better, but I have no idea of how well they last as I have only used the paper ones on my cars so far.

Make some out of gasket card and spray with waterproofing - will last years (maybe decades if you're lucky).

Cheers, Ian

i think i like the docs method best. choose my gasket colour at the freezer section, eat the icecream and then make my gaskets from the tub.
