Post subject:  No Gears

I have a remote gearbox, car was driving fine then all of a sudden can't get 2nd or 3rd gears at all, feel jammed. Can still get 1st and 4th any ideas what happened?

Does it still drive okay in 1st and 4th?
I won't have an answer for you, but it seems a pertinent question.
Also is it a 4 synchro box?
I doubt its a selector problem, as one selector is for 1/2, and the other is for 3/4.

Sounds like the knuckle joints on the back of the box are loose and one has jumped on it's splines. Get someone to wiggle the gearstick while watching the joints, I imagine they will be pretty loose.

cheers,

Jacob

It has no synchro on first. The box made a loud noise and havent tried to drive it. 1 anf 4 are with motor not started.

if it made a loud noise & then instantly the gears started jamming up,,, then i1`d suggest that "Maybe" the diff planetary gears have gone bang & now big bits of them are jammed inbetween your gear selector assemblys & the bottom of the case

just a guess

there`s not many time where i hope i`m wrong
but this is one of them

that happened when my diff went, the crown wheel picked up a shattered tooth and smashed it into the back of the diff housing, right into the selector shaft - locked it solid

I think I agree with the above diagnosis.
The only other remote box lockup scenario I have knowledge of involved a 3-4 selector fork that came loose on its shaft whilst in 3rd gear. When the driver slowed and grabbed 2nd gear, the whole thing locked up in the middle of the main drag near Sydney airport, and had to be towed.

If it's the diff shat itself, you will be up for diff pin + spider gears etc minimum. That's if the errant bits haven't cracked the gearbox casing, buggered the crownwheel & pinion, or bent the gearbox mainshaft.

Hey Listen

I`d be checking the Knuckles ontop of the diff firast like Jacob said

& anything else external that you can think of or look at

funnier things have happened than me being wrong, so don`t "Trust" any internet forum anybody... don`t rely on what anyone says until you check everything "External" first

eliminate things one at a time

check & double check before you rip a donk out

please?

i hate being a part of an ebgine rip-out if it turns out that it didnt need ripping out

ok?

Maybe you could jack the car up, support on stands, pull the plugs out, and see if the wheels can be turned either with car in or out of gear.
That may reveal something?
