Do they need the shields installed? What purpose do they serve?

Not required.
They keep the heat in the disc.

They're meant to keep stones out. I've run mine for years without.
They used to get taken off because they reckon the brakes cooled better without them. Probably right I guess, but pads a better these days too.

My experience is they keep stones IN (well, they did on my 998 ones).
I think the real reason was to help keep salt and slush off the rotors, that's probably important in UK but not here.

Yeah, My set would stay off as they have if I wasn't on the original fit bandwagon... Lucky discs are cheap!
