Firewall 'blanket' in engine bay

Post subject:  Firewall 'blanket' in engine bay
What's everyone's thoughts on any kind of soundproofing/fire blanket (original or otherwise) in the engine bay? Worthwhile (why?)? Just another hassle?

Also, for those that do have one, are the original items on the firewall (flasher cans, washer pump, fuse box etc) mounted under or over the blanket? The one in our '80 is too munted for me to tell how it used to look :lol: I think it generally looks likes the padding had cut outs around these items, but the replacements I see for sale have no cut outs....

Yes worth it IMO (but then anything is better than 100db all the time) , put Dynamat or similar on the firewall/dash on the inside of the car instead if you don't want a dirty blanket on top of your electricals. Coupled with bonnet insulation audibly reduces noise.

I put dynamat on the lower firewall and kickboard of my car, and a dense sponge / foil commercial sound deadener / absorber on the upper firewall. Works pretty well, but I do wish I'd have put dynamat on the panel where the wheels are.

Yeah I did the whole interior with Dynamat, approx 30KG worth...

Not really what it's intended for...it's not a barrier. Mind you, what you should be using is heavier!

Hi Lillie where did you fit it, floors, firewall, etc. and on a scale 1-10 what would be the approx. sound reduction do you think there would be any concerns with moisture getting between it and the panels. Thanks

Not sure about the safety comment, but that stuff looks alright. Doesn't seem to feature over this side of the ditch though unfortunately.

Hi Darrell,

Firstly my GR 1330 is as bloody noisy as they come, 5.5inch 45mm Dellorto and 2" exhaust. I used to set off car alarms idling past parked cars :oops: So anything helps.

I put it on EVERY panel inside the car, floors, front and rear firewalls, wheel wells etc. I would say, out of 10, it's at least a 7 or 8 in terms of quietening things down.

It's not so much just the this one thing alone that makes for a totally quiet car, a lot of sound leaks from the hole in the firewall at the front for instance, (for which I have a webber box welded in and dynamat over that too), a bike hot dog before the Lukey style muffler also helps, bonnet insulation, thick insulated door cards etc all do a small job each but overall makes for a noticeable difference.

It only takes one weak point for sound to leak through, like door rubbers. Anyway it's not exactly silent now but I can at least have a decent conversation with my 3yr old at speed, which is a huge improvement over shouting to be heard!

The is an outlet in Brisbane called the Reverse Garbage Shop when industry can dump some of their offcuts - I picked up some lead lined foil backed foam - more than enough for the Mini - for $8. Only hassle is it's about an inch thick but it will do the job.
