What is the deal with import duty taxing? I'm planing on buying a Quafie LSD at 603.40 GB pound converted to $976.84 AUD, the bank wants to charge a $30 transfer fee (is that reasonable?) but the total cost is $1006.84. Will I get charged import duty taxs or fees because the total amount is over 1k or is it based on the amount of the money going overseas or is it just based on the amount the item costs? |

Who are you buying from? I think miniDave paid less than that, from Swiftune. Do you have paypal? Might eliminate the bank charge... |

It's based on the item cost with postage included. Bank fees etc don't come into the equation. Should be able to get the quaife delivered without any hassle |

What is written in the statutes and what actually happens can be different -my disc brakes with freight came to $1100 but came in no worries - but then the customs declaration just said car parts and had the GBP price and no mention of freight charge so guess they don't stop and ponder every package. |

I have imported heaps of parts worth more than $1000. Just ask them to put the value as £500 and you will be right or see if a local supplier will match the price for you. Only thing I have been caught on was a full interior from newton commercial as they forgot or didnt want to mark it less. Had to supposedly fill in all manner of customs shite, left it all blank and just wrote parts for a 50 year old car. Was delivered to my door the next day no duty. |

This topic has been debated many times ![]() My experience is if the value of the goods is less than $1000 then I have not had any issue, this does not include freight costs. If the value is over $1000 then sometimes the seller may be OK to write out the customs form for less then actual cost. Good luck |

Ah yes i was wrong about including postage, my bad. If the value of the goods is over $1000 then you pay duty on the goods, then you are taxed GST on the goods, the duty and the postage http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page5549.asp |

Last thing I bought was $1020 (with postage) - no tax for me. There must be some small percentage as a buffer to allow for the changing dollar? |

Never had a problem with a overseas supplier providing a receipt for under a $1000 aud, I've ordered parts over 3k and haven't had to pay tax/ duties, just email them. Ordered from Japan and the uk this way |

I've sent a link of this thread to Wayne Swan. This is where the surplus has gone. People avoiding import duty on mini parts. Shame on you all! |

Mr Swan would know that under CUSTOMS REGULATIONS (AMENDMENT) 1995 NO. 244 there is no duty on parts for historic cars. |
