Hi all. Just got back from Russell Engineering with my new motor: ![]() Graham was kind enough to let me stay and watch the dyno runs. Bit like being at the birth of your child, except the baby usually doesn't get thrashed half to death... Very exciting to watch and hear. Now I need a couple of bits to finish it off. Does anyone know what starter motors (Jap please) will bolt in? I've been told Gemini (which model??), but surely they'd all be fossilised by now... I also need a dipstick and tube. Any ideas? |

One of my Bosch Planetary geared ones will be great for this engine. It will wind it over like it has no compression. |

Hope the motor goes well for you re dipstick tube if it is a pre A plus , minisports do a metal dipstick tube - i was recently pointed to them, also. |

Have you a picture on the dyno output? What are the specs of your motor |

Thanks for the interest. I don't recall the exact specs, so if Grahame is reading, perhaps he'd like to chip in??? I know it is a bit over 1400cc and has one of GR's little street cams in it (RE13?), and a GR head with monster valves (my contribution). GR's dyno doesn't give print-outs, but I do recall it made over 115hp @ 6500 and 105 @ 7000, after which the power fell off. The power band was very broad, and from memory, the power was over 100hp over a 3500prm band, so it seems it will be a very streetable engine, which was the exact request. Torque was over 100ft/lb. You have got to understand that I was somewhat overwhelmed seeing my engine screaming away on the dyno. I took a video of it, but I've got absolutely no idea how to post it. I should have copied down the magic numbers, but too much else was happening and I needed to get on the road back to Brisbane. It was a lot of fun having GR build the engine, and now all I have to do is fit it. But bear in mind - this project began in 1997 - can't rush these things... |

What would that be at the wheels? |

I'm pretty sure GR only has an engine dyno, so at the flywheel I believe. Also my interpretation of those figures is it's not worth reving past 5000 due to the peak torque, the peak bhp won't do extra...correct? |

Also my interpretation of those figures is it's not worth reving past 5000 due to the peak torque, the peak bhp won't do extra...correct? HP = torque x rpm/5250 approx. It might give peak torque @ 5000 (so does mine) but the HP (and performance) there is still rising with RPM. I'd run it to 6000-6500 if in a hurry. ![]() eg, my 1360 gave peak torque at around 5000-5500, but its peak HP came in at 7000. When it hits 5000 it gets a second wind and hauls ass to 7500.. ![]() |

I'm pretty sure Tony (Convertiblemini) knows that, he was asking for an estimate of it at the wheels. Depends on how tight everything is and what sort of transmission, etc etc. But say it drops 30% then that is about 88hp atw. Not bad when you think about it. cheers michael |

I can vouch for this starter. Dead easy to fit, delivered on time and turns my (mostly) GR built 1411cc with 10.8:1 comp no problems. Never an issue with the bendix gear getting stuck either. cheers michael |

Like Mick's, it spins mine like a top. |
