Post subject:  Mk1 air cleaner wing nuts

I'm just finishing off assembling a set of standard twin Su but I've hit a snag.

I know I don't have the correct air cleaner wing nuts but I have a set of the UK ones that look very similar.

However I now realise they are too short. When the air cleaner is all assembled the bottom of the wing nut doesn't even reach the threaded shaft. I'm guessing this could be because the ones I have are for the later air cleaner that is thinner (later mk2 and GT ??? )

Can someone confirm if there is a longer version of this style of wing nut available.

I'd also be interested to buy a set of the "correct" wing nuts if anyone has a set.

Cheers

Get rid of the fibre washers, or at the very least get the really thin ones (like paper thin). They don't bind by a lot of turns, and when you force them to hang onto the last couple of threads, that's when they will strip out.

Those wing nuts are just about as valid as any in my mind. They were actually used on a lot of the British Coopers. I've just not worked out which models or if they were a mixed supply.

Thanks mick I have actually found some of your old post re this. Even with no fibre washer it won't reach. Only way it will reach is if I also remove the rubber ring/seal below the air cleaner.

Yes, another unnecessary impediment to the wingnuts taking hold. Get rid of those as well.

The old wingnuts wear their last few turns out over many years, making the last threads more of a guide on what they should look like rather than anything actually functional. We have to be relatively gentle with these old units.

Once they take up, the centre of the can should compress a little and let the wingnut take on more turns.

Hi Phill - there's two types of wing nuts, one for the early Cooper S and another for later. Parts numbers are 12G2705 and 17H8380. If you have a look at the Somerford site they show which one goes on which air cleaner box. Hover over the part to see a description box appear, and scroll down to see some further narrative. It looks like you have the taller box and shorter nuts.

P.S. John Smidt may have the ones you need.

When, and if did the Mk2 change to the slimmer box or was it changed when the GT came along. Also what filters are you using in the taller box the slimmer ones are to short for the tall box I'm using Ryco A256 in the tall box but seen a bit to big in diameter..

These may be the type you need - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Morris-Mini- ... 4ac4b19b05

See the seller also has a few sets of carbys and air boxes listed.

I think you will find those are from a Sprite way to long but you can cut them down to suit think you also need to tap the thread deeper

A possible solution I have thought of would be to put a theaded "stud" into the end of the nut then get an "extension" machined/made up.

No, they`re not correct
they`re from an early 1100S or mini auto (single inch & a half carb with Tin filter housing)

Yes, of course. I have one of each of these boxes with the second one being a UK MK2 or GT short box. One is fully 6 mm narrower than the other. I never figured the bolts were shorter as well however...

Why dont you just make up some longer studs that way can use the ones you even with the fibre washer if you want, a nice piece of silver steel would do the trick

Don't use `silver steel' (which is hi carbon tool steel)- it's too hard to cut threads onto without them tearing. A bit of mild steel rod would be fine, but I'm with Phill- lengthening the short wingnuts would be easy.

For a temporary fix, you could try adding a threaded piece and nut on top of the threaded post inside the air cleaner...

Kev, thats why you buy good quality taps or dies, :) I would do them on a lathe (I need the practice)
