I've purchased a Mini that has no timing marks on the flywheel as they've been machined off.
There's also no notch on the belt pulley or arrows on the timing cover.
Does anyone know how I can check/set the timing on such a car using a timing light?
Also, the previous owner stated that the rocker gap is the same as a standard Cooper S-does anyone know what this gap would be?
Any assistance would be most welcome.

I would put a pointer on or near the timing cover and then notch the pulley. Just put one mark, for TDC then use a dialback electronic timing light. No other marks needed.
To find TDC I put a dial gauge & magnetic base on top of the head, use a pushrod down #1 plug hole located by the dial gauge spindle. Get it near TDC first by watching the dizzy rotor. When you find it, then v mark the pulley.
If you are a masochist with a mirror, you could mark the flywheel instead..

Thanks Dr Mini
I'll have to get myself a good magnetic dial gauge.
Pleas excuse my ignornace but once I find TDC using a dial gauge, how would I determine retarded/advanced settings in degrees.?
regards
Dave

Good Idea Doc I have marks on the flywheel but a mark on the pulley is so much easier.

You can put more advance marks round the pulley, it is basic trigonometry. Use a 6" steel rule to measure round.
Or you can bend a bit of sheet metal, bolt it next to the timing cover and mark that.
But it's easier to just put a TDC mark, and go buy a dialback timing light from `convertible mini' on here, he imports them. Or, go eBay and try your luck. Prices around $100 up.
These lights work great, you set the advance you want on the screen, it electronically moves the neon flash timing point. It has a tacho in it for rpm, you turn the dizzy until the marks align at whatever rpm you want.
I do mine at 4000 rpm which is past my max centrifugal advance point.
This is better for power than setting at idle and praying the dizzy advance curve is still correct after 40 years or so.

Thanks again Doc
I've never heard of this type of timing light-I'll definitely need to invest in one.
Thanks again for your advice it is appreciated greatly.
Regards
Dave

Here's the one I have, you can find it cheaper if you trawl eBay.
Or contact convertible mini as I suggested for a similar one.
