Post subject:  Different looking bearings on each side at the front?

Hi, i have just started re-assembling the front steering and brakes and noticed the front wheel bearings appear to be different on each side. One side apears to be the roller bearing type and the other the ball bearings in a cage.

Each hub has a different inner to obviously fit the different type of bearing cage.

Is this a problem?... or does it mean i just order one of each bearing type?
Cheers

it just means that someone has replaced the bearings on one side, and didn't do the other side... when you replace them, use tapered rollers on both sides

that shouldn't be the case - the drive flanges and uprights are compatible with both types of bearing

simon, one side appears to be smooth for the roller bearing, the other seems to have the groove for the ball bearings to wedge into.
does that make sense?... will the roller bearings fit on the grooved side also

the bearings are in two parts, an inner race and an outer race. The inner locates on the drive flange, the outer locates on the upright. When you replace a bearing you MUST replace both sides, as they're a matched set, and both sides wear

the outer race comes out - if you look behind the back ridge of the bearing race, you'll see there are two cutouts in the upright 180* apart. Get a punch/drift and tap on the race there and it'll come out. They are tight

i must be having a moment, for some reason i thought the only part on a new set was the inner race, hence my question
Oh well, will put it down to still learning!!
