Post subject:  The how to build a cold air induction kit to suit a webber.

Some time ago I built this cold air induction kit for my car as I was after a means to get the carbie cooler air and I got a thew people asking how I did it.
well I thought i would show you.
I took photos for the second one I made but I forgot to take messurements so
I would only use this as a guide but anyone with the brains to do a jig saw can do it.

step 1.
Image
this is some of the crap i used all can be bourght from bunnings.

step 2
Image
I used a ramflow air filter to get my shape i wanted this cost arond $60
i mesured this agents the polly pipe and marked a rectangle section for the air filter to sit in.
pipe used was 65 mm internal dia 70mm to the outside edge.
Image
drill holes in each corner of the maked out section so you can cut this bit out.
Image
Image
place the pipe ontop of the filter.
Image
hot melt the air pod to the pipe with a hot melt gun.
best thing to use for this as if you get it wrong its easy to redo.
Image
once the hot melt is hard turn it over lke so make sure it stuck good.
Image
cut away all excess metal mesh from pod like so.
now at this point you should put the angel piece on the end and trial fit it i diddnt take a photo of this but its inportant as if the angle is wrong it will hit on the webber and not fit as there isent much room bettween the webber and the fire wall so a trail fit is a must.
if its a tight fit you can allways fit once finished onto the webber first then slide the weber back onto the manifold.
Image
nows the time to strech material over the whole thing.
Image
start at one edge and work your way around.
i used hot melt to hold the material onto the pod.this way you can strech it and stick it quickly to get a good look.
i used an old t shirt for this.
the next step is to use fiber glass resin to make the materail go hard.
I did take photos of this but cant find them but this bit isent hard to do.
just as long as the material goes hard it will be ok.
Image
then i covered the whole out side with a putty solution.any will do as long as it easy to sand.mine dried within two hours.
Image
once it was dry i saned it then spayed it with a spary on putty.
Image
i then puttyed up any ruff bits and once this was dry i sanded it again.
them i gave it another coat of spray on putty then another sand.then a top coat.
then 4 coats of gloss.
hope this gives you all an idea of how i did it??
its quite basic the method i used is the same method stereo installers use to make door speaker pods etc, basicly all they do is get a speaker ring mount it to a board on an angle and strech material over it,and resin it to make it go hard, then remove the back board and all they are left with is a shaped speaker ring.

ive got one of these in my work shop kinda finished all it needs is paint etc but it will only fit if you put it on the webber first then put the webber on the car.

Did you put ram stacks in the Cold air intake... to help the air flow.

its only a guide for ya all and the photos are not that good but i thourght it would help you if anyone wants to try it themselfs??
maybe make it better,as stated b4 it dose need a bigger pipe for the air,im using 2 inch but this dosent seem to be big enough so i will go for a flexible type later on

cant see why not....just join two air filters together with the polly pipe ???
same idear just use two air filters to get the required shape.

I still don't like cold air induction with carbys. I have seen Webers freeze up at Winton and I have had SUs freeze up on the freeway. And that was without a cold air box!

Sorry for the stupid questions.. How does cold air help? And is the air just coming up from the front of the car?

Looks really cool btw!

Looks like you did a good job. I am just worried... is the pipe too small? :? Someone where did something similar and complained that at high revs it runs worste because the intake pipe was too small and from memory it was larger than the one that you have there

Just a thought...

Also since you cover half of the filtration area doesn't that effectively... well halve the filtration area?? meaning that the ramflow is no longer ram flowing and it's... err... half flowing

If you really want a good one that works, here's how it should be done, IMO
`justminis' hillclimb car....
Note, it is NOT sealed around the carb...

ok..well yes at first it was running bad when i put it on but i had to have it re tuned to suit the webber, and yes im still having a little problem with high revs..it dose seem to want more air than what i can give it...and i noticed the other day when i took it out with out it it ran better but it does seem to run smother with it on i think i just need to run a larger pipe to the box...will problely giver up on it later on and just run ram pipes and sock fillters as ti ran ohhh sooo nice with no filter at all.but for now im happy plus it looks good.
