Post subject:  Thoughts on 1400+cc on road

Hi guys,

I have been looking at different hearts for my '63 850 such as a turbo or a BMW K-headed big or small bore, but i have been offered an offset bored 1100S 1400+. We aren't actually sure if its a 1408 or 1428 as it was built in the 80's and was put into storage when replaced with a turbo 1380. I know the builder (he's offering it to me for a price i cant refuse) and he knows a few stats but not the exact capacity as it was built almost 30 years ago


ANYWAY, i'm just wondering what peoples thoughts are on using 1400+ strokers in road/semi-track cars. What are your Experiences, anything to look out for, etc. I am thinking a new set of gaskets throughout and obviously fluid flush and changes before cranking it over, but any other things to look out for?
We are keen on running twin SU's, rather than a weber, any thoughts?

It only has a 12g940 head atm and standard rockers, but has lightened flywheel, MK2 S gearbox and some other little goodies

It will be used like a weekender with some track use (might give motorkhanas and sprints a go)

My Convertible has a stroker in it which is 1408. It is a great engine very torquey. It has a standard head. HIF44 and 731 Cam. And one of my Electronic Ignition kits of course. I also run a 12 inch wheels and 3.1 Diff in it as it does not need high revs to have power. This is one of my own built engines with my own piston Mod which I have been using since the 80s.

I was running a 1428cc turbo motor for many years before I went to the current A+ block, it was a great engine combo, it used a Kent KC500 cam and the std metro turbo setup. HUGE torque and very reliable.

I still have it here but in a few bits.

Even if it needs a rebuild, if its a good price grab it.

If you don't want it I will buy it from you....

I built a 1412 stroker for the wife's van, with a single HS6, RE13 cam and Corolla rockers it made 113.6HP and 113ft/lb torque.
I had it in my Mini for 5,000km to `run it in'. It went very well.:mrgreen:
Strokers are strong on torque and reliable, as long as you don't rev them past 7000- they don't need it.

I like the idea of electronic ignition. So you make your own kits?

You had turboed a 1428, wouldnt that be running the gauntlet? what sort of boost levels were you running? Intercooled?

Just the parts alone are worth more than his asking price, so I somehow have to get it past the missus and grab it. Crap timing as we're moving on thursday so running it past her will hurt (she doesnt even want to see a movie as $30 is too much ha!). I'm usually honest but maybe this needs to be done quietly ;)

Thanks Doc, Is your wifes stroker still going? It sounds pretty solid!
I have a feeling this stroker im looking at was sometimes revved to 9k rpm. When you suggest a 7000rpm limit is that to safeguard the block or valvetrain?


I was of the belief that going above 1400cc was risky and prone to cracking cylinder walls. Much like a grenade.
Although then hearing of people going above 1500cc confuses the issue somewhat

I dont know what ratio diff is in it, but it will be run on the 10" mambas i bought. What sort of Ratio would be healthy, 3.1, 3.44?

@Braad,
Strokers (with stroked big journal 1100S cranks) are a bit like 1098s. If you expect the cranks to last, don't rev the tits orf either. :lol:
By `last' I mean for many years of road use, not for a race meeting or two.

The wife's 1412 stroker motor is now going into Gafmo's van. If/when I finish the van body I will just build another motor, probably a bored out 1098 with a 1275 head on it. :lol:

I ran a 3.44 diff with 10" wheels, but it would have pulled a 3.1 just fine.

Brad,,, Strokers are awesome engines, we`ve been building stroker mini motors longer than most people on this forum have been alive :-)

Tony (Convertablemini) uses the chinese made electronic kits & they`re fine yes

The problem you mention about big mini engines is more of a "bore-diameter" problem,,, too big a bore makes the walls pretty thin,,, hence why we keep our stroker engines bore size down to reasonable 73mm,,, that way there is still plenty of wall strength & are far better (Safer) than bigger bore engines.

you gain the extra capacity from a 73mm bore (1360cc) with the stroker crank, which then makes that 1360 into a 1412... keeping the 73mm bore , got it?

my own roady stroker is 1510cc, yes pretty big bore at 74.7mm & very long stroke at 86mm

My good friend Stewys race mini is 1591cc

but , it they are very safe at 73mm bore & then add the stroker crank to make a 1412cc-ish (or thereabouts)

so don`t be scared,,, they`re great engines yes :-) & yes i`m "Very" biased towards them :-)

The head gaskets (BK450's) did not last too long with the std ignition system I had, if I had the awesome mega jolt I'm running now it would have been fine, I was running around 8.5:1 CR and ran a max of about 14 psi, the cam did not really like to go past 7k so never had other issues, no cooler at that stage, even did a few track days in it too.

Mine was a rocket before it met its match.

Make sure everything is beautifully balanced.
Make sure you don't work it too hard (no big revs, that's not what they are designed for, anyway).
Make sure the gudgeon pins are central in the conrod and don't touch the side of the bore.

And you're half way to having an awesome road engine.

1430cc is great on the road, and damn good fun on the track too!
Crank is still holding together (was checked when the bottom end was refreshed) despite hitting 7,800 rpm holding third into the top corner at Barbagello Raceway a few times.
