Ok so ive been experimenting with this new stuff plastidip the last few months and gotten some practice to finally get around to spraying my mini and some other cars and parts.

For those that are not sure what it is plastidip is a rubber silicone that is applied by either spraying, brush painting or dipping to a object. This stuff is completely safe to use on any material provided it doesn't get to hot and will stick to anything i.e glass, metal, wood, tile, plaster walling etc. The great thing about this stuff is it can be easily removed if no longer wanted and does no damage to the material underneath. It also comes in a variety of colours (including camo colours).

That looks cool, i have heard of it a bit in the drift community, but whats the benefit of it over vinyl wrap? lIt seems to look very similar

Looks the goods mate, what would it cost to do a mini like that? I have seen a few clips of people using it and thought it a good idea. Can you get a shiny finish or is it all matt?

watch any clips from "dipmycar.com" they paint exhaust tips and brake callipers with it. can be used in heated applications.

looks good mate. thinking of having a play with it to do some cool features!

Plastidip isnt new, Its been around for decades, but It seems to have had a resurgence in the car scene lately.

It comes off quite easily, You wont be able to pressure wash your car, As a daily you would be lucky to get 12 moths out of it.

Hmmm.. To me you messed it up...

I'm with TK I like Shiny.. But hey whatever floats your boat. And if it protects underneath like you say, well why not go for a change.


IM assuming because it is silicone/plastic if it chips it will just peel off in chunks (like peeling dried paint from a paint can) or PVA glue dried on your hands?

A couple things with plastidip, if applied correctly it does not come off easily. You can see in this video that they pressure wash it easily.

Plastidip is funny stuff. When you apply it straight up, it bonds to the surface but given a while it really sticks and it smooths over a lot too. It holds really well but does not come off in flakes or chips, it peels off like when you get too sunburnt (maybe a foreign concept for you southerners ;)

I have plastidipped the clubman grille, got lots of friends who have plastidipped all sorts of things, from grilles & badges on sporty cars to even 4wd rims (they were fine but hard to clean dirt off, stood up to the beating though)

Compared to vinyl wrapping it's significantly easier to get off the car (it would take maybe 10 minutes to peel it off this mini, seriously) and it's quite simply to apply at home (comes in spray cans) and is fairly forgiving in the thickness of coats, etc.

I'm pretty sold on the stuff, it's actually pretty amazing but I'm not a giant fan of the matte black cars. If you want to do customisation to it though, go for it, it's actually pretty adhesive and easy to try new things. If I get new wheels one day with a bit of a fatter offset and need new flares, I'll get some proper flares (rather than innocenti plastic ones) and get them painted body colour then plastidip them black, means you can change your mind :)

took around 1 and half cans to do

once you get a corner up it is pretty easy to peel off but it takes so effort, it wont come off with a pressure cleaner cause ive already tested it and its fine, i also tested it on my bonnet for a month before doing the whole car with no issues..

peeled it off in one piece and did no damage, hand washed it and pressure cleaned it with no dramas.

plastidip has been around for a while however not for this type of use.

i would favor this over vinyl wrap mainly cause its cheaper.. and if i get bored of it or it gets ruined i can easily peel it off without damaging the paint.

you can get a gloss coat however i think it looks crap and you would be better off using regular paint...

I need to plastidip my roof! I wanted to paint it mattblack but I might aswell paint it White and plastidip :) would it hide minor imperfections???

yes easy, if you were to spray the whole car without masking, as painful as it would be you could simply run a razor blade to cut out the bits & peel it off

places that sell it are:

Ebay, Autobarn, plastidip.net.au, plastidipAU (on facebook) they come in alot of colours but more recently they have been bringing in glossy dips
prices usually start from $20 a can for a matte finish to upto $30 a can for something a bit more fancy.

only need about 4 layers to get a decent dip, i painted 4 rims & used about a can a rim
