If you have original struts that you are replacing with the hi-los i would wind them out so they are the same length, or just shorter then the original depending on what height you want the car.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting it set perfectly to begin with, because it won't take that long for the rubber to settle in and drop some height.

Changing the ride height also changes you wheel alignment, so i would just set it up roughly until it settles, then set it all up properly

once you have the ride heights where you want them,,, get the wheel alignment straight away

after a little while (maybe a few weeks to a month-ish usually) they will settle in throughgout that period,,, & then you can just keep chasing the ride heights trying to keep them within 5mm of where you originally put them

if after a month or so you have ride heights back to where you originally had them when the wheel alignment was done, then by rights won`t need to re-wheel align it

Even after getting the replacement knuckle joints I found that one of the hilo's has the wrong size hole (too small) in the top and none of the knuckle joints will fit in it.

Topic says it all really. I am putting new cones and hilos into my deluxe tomorrow and so far I haven't found out anything about setting them up? What is the best way to get them level? By eye, height to the guard etc Any pointers would be gratefully accepted, cheers, CJ

I'd say if you've got new cones and such, you should be able to start it off with counting the flats turned as they should all be the same sizes. I think this is something they'll do as well at a wheel alignment too as changing the ride height on the hilos changes a lot of the other geometry too? Someone should chime in to tell me I'm wrong soon

yeah,,, get them all into the car & wind up some tension ,,, you will be able to feel the tension so set the same tension on all of them then once you have the car back on the ground you can set them by the heights If you can imagine as you`re fitting them & then just setting with some play (no tension) then when you put the car back on the ground it will me soooo low that it will be like one of those stoopid californian low-riders & the other side of the coin is that if you set them with way too much tension then it will be sooo high like a 4x4 so,,, set them all up with a little bit of tension,,, wind them all up until you take the play out of it all & add a few turns of tension, turn them roughly all the same turns & feel of tension to start with & then see what it sits like once back on the ground re-set them to the correct ride-heights after that

Or do I get it done straight away and redone after a period of time (settling)?

Well 2 and a half hilo's fitted........ Rears went in fine and the body is sitting at the the height it was before putting it up on stands (yes it will drop a bit but good enough to start) Fronts, well................ Damn they suck! At the close of play I had the drivers side out and almost ready to reassemble. Play was halted due to lack of parts, namely I couldn't get the bloody knuckle joint off the trumpet have 2 new knuckle joints now so hopefully I can get a run on the front again in a few days. CJ

Before you check your height, check your tyre pressure, make sure you are on a LEVEL floor and measure your height floor to trim edge where the floor joins the side panels ie where that chrome strip usually runs. Trying to do it to guards can be flawed especially given how old these things are and whether you have had guards replaced, flares fitted poorly etc,

Hmm another day spent trying to get these bloody things in Even after getting the replacement knuckle joints I found that one of the hilo's has the wrong size hole (too small) in the top and none of the knuckle joints will fit in it So I now have 3 corners done and one still in bits. Have sent the faulty hilo off with a mate and hopefully minisport will be able to swap it for one in the morning that will fit a knuckle joint, then I might be able to get to the point of actually having to adjust them to get the right height...... Well the damn things are in and poorly adjusted but hey that was the hard part right? Being a long weekend I was unable to get a wheel alignment done so that is my job for Tuesday, assuming I can find somewhere to do it....... Taking it out for its first run today (just a short one) cause the sun is shining and I haven't been able to drive for months. CJ

CJ This why both Karcraft and Matt Read are now getting their Hi-Los CNC machined here out of billet alloy. Quality of many imported ones has gone out the window.
