It would have been positive earth originally but if its running an alternator now its most likely negative earth.

Timbo's right, alternators are negative earth, generators can be either.

The other advantage of neg earth is that modern transistorised radio head units can be used.

Alternators are mainly Negative earth. I have only ever come across one car that had positive Earth and ran an Alternator. This was the Datsun Fairlady. Very hard to find Alternator parts for them.

English Lucas 11AC alternator was positive earth, but afaik we never got them here. The first ones used in Oz were the 15AC which were neg earth, as are all later ones.

If You are thinking of putting the lucas11AC alternator on so you can stay positive earth,Be very careful because most Lucas 11AC alternators are negative earth
so please do not think if You buy a Lucas 11AC alt that it will be positive earth.
make sure You ask the question before Buying

Just to be sure, have a look at the battery to see whether the positive or negative terminal is grounded.
