Post subject:  clutch arm and plunger
Hi there,

just wanting to pick your brains about clutch arms and the thrust plunger that goes with it.

I had my mini on the road about 2 years ago and replaced the arm and plunger, drove it around for 6 months and then pulled the engine out for a rebuild. I have gotten back into it recently and I've noticed that there is a lot of wear for only 6 months driving!

Is this normal? can you buy hardened ones? is there a way to check if one is harder than the other as i'd rather change the arm every so often than the plunger.

Original ones were both hardened. Whether the current quality ones sold still are I'm not sure, but they need to be for durability.

[edit] If you cannot file the ball or the outside of the plunger (near the hole) they are hardened..

If you want to know `how hard', you need to take the parts to someone who has a Rockwell or similar hardness tester. eg a toolroom or heat treatment shop.

I would send it back to the supplier if soft, and get my money back. Not fit for purpose..
You should not have to re-engineer NEW parts.

If the good ones are now unobtainium new, either find a good s/h one, or get one made to sample (out of heat treatable steel) on a CNC mill. Make a bunch get them hardened, and people will buy them.
This local manufacture has happened here already with various parts, eg Hi-Los.
