Trying to sort out timing marks for my motor running an MED pulley. Why they don't degree it i don't know.

Do have timing marks on the flywheel, but would also like markings on front pulley.

MSD sell a timing tape but it needs to be the correct diameter pulley to work.

What have other people done? Need to make a pointer also. My timing cover has no timing indicator either.

Also how do you set up the wiring to statically time the engine with petronix ign with the engine not in the car?

I would use either a late Clubby timing cover with degree marks on it, or else weld a pointer onto the early cover.
Then put #1 piston on TDC with a dial gauge, and file a V mark on the pulley.
A TDC mark is all you need, IF you have a dialback timing light. They are around $100 up.

To static time a Pertronix 1 (which won't zero speed switch) you cannot do it with a test lamp like you did with points. I just aligned the rotor with the #1 plug lead (mark the dizzy base) with the crank at ~10°BTDC.
This is near enough to get it running, then use the dialback light set to 30° which is pretty close for max advance on most A series. Rev until it's at full advance (4000 is a good speed).

[edit] If it is a Pertronix 1, do NOT leave ign turned on for more than 30secs without the motor running, you will fry the module.
If it's a Pertronix II ignore this comment.

I have about 8 timimg covers - none of course with timing marks!

Will try to pick one up at the mini wreckers over w/e.

Set rotor button to line up with no 1 lead at 10deg bdtc as you described.

Dial back light sounds great you would then only need a tdc mark?

Yes that's the only mark you need.
The light has a tacho display too.

I've just bent up a bit of sheet metal, with a point on it that runs close to the pulley. Attached it to the motor using 1 of the timing case bolts. Works a treat

Yep that works fine, before I got this dialback timing light I had a bit of tin on there, marked all the way to 40°BTDC... (this motor runs @38° due to the bathtubbed chambers and no squish area).
