Just put the air filters back on after getting the SU's adjusted and balanced right (at least I thought so) and noticed a bit of exhaust smoke that never used to be there on idle. Took it for a drive, went really well, smoke gone but idle really crept up. Does this sound too rich, or maybe something else? |

I have the exact same thing happening at the moment. New air filter and tune and it started smoking |

I'm using k&n conicals. Yeah strange one, obviously tuned it without them on and took it for a quick run around the block with no smoke. It only started after they were refitted |

Yeah those K&N may not have enough surface area to allow the engine to breath adequately compared to whatever setup you had prior to this and therefor may have thrown out the tuning. That will explain smokey startup. Opposite would be true if the new filter is less restrictive than the previous setup and the engine will run lean. It's pretty staggering how much difference a filter makes to the tuning. On Lillee I had 190 mains running no filter and even with a relatively high flow large Piper Cross double sock, I am now running 162 mains. That is 6-7 jets difference! |

Also be sure that there isn't too much oil on the filter. They usually come pre-oiled, so that would be fine if it's new. They ('they' being people with mini knowledge) reckon that the best air filter system (especially for a small bore) is to use a k&n ring filter in the original filter box, and drill some 1/2" holes through the sides of the box. But I've been using a conical filter for a few years now, and it's just fine. |

As always a number of issues at play. Took a while to start when it smoked (choke adjustment) so probably flooded and burning away fuel for a while. Retarded the timing a smidgen of a poofteenth and now starts first spin. The racing idle was also the choke adjustment, no return spring so got a bit of fast idle from the free play. All good now. |
