Did a bit more work today and figured I'd start it.

Now on and off it's been fiving me trouble starting, like it makes that noise you hear when people start their car wrong, sort of like a whrrrr and then a let down noise.

Anyway I figured the starter was dodgy so I pulled it out and put in a spare I had that came with my mokes engine a year ago.

Then all I got was click click when I turned the ignition.

Had a spare starter coil thing (forget itf its the solenoid or coil, it' a silver tube bolts in and connects to the dizzy and + and - wires) so I put that in as well to to error test and same click click click .

Have to run to work now so I can't playtest with parts that I know actually work from the moke (the ones I played with today were from the moke and working when removed) but anything I can do to diagnose it properly rather then just trial and error swapping parts around till it works?

I did have the starter going for a bit but it sounded really slow, like almost dead and not enough power was getting to it to make it turn over properly if that helps.

Check your battery is connected properly.

It may seem all connected and fine but if your ground is the tiniest bit loose it will be like a flat battery. This always happens in my mini.

it sounds like your battery is flat, if it does give a bit of slow turn
get the cheapest batt recharger money can buy
(they pretty much all work the same, some quicker than others and thats what you pay for)
and that turnover should be better

put a little capful of fuel down the air intake to help things along too

btw. you changed the coil, and i dont think it has anything to do with startermotor, but its good you changed it anyway

The coil has nothing to do with the starter. 68matic is right. The solenoid does, however. It could be a faulty starter solenoid. They don't wear down often (well they SHOULDN'T - see my link ), but it could be that. Check the conenctions around the solenoid, and if all else fails, replace it.

Or you have a flat battery, as was previously mentioned.

Have you actually moved the car anywheres since the problem errrggghh "started"?..maybe the Bendix gear is jammed in the ring gear?

i'd have to concur with FM. anytime ive had click-clickyness, it's been a solenoid problem. if the battery is charged, and the terminals are clean, i'd be looking there next.

The battery is 2 days old and worked when I turned it over after putting it in.

Will check the earth tommorow morning when I get up, hopefully that's all it is.

Went outside with a torch and had a fiddle in the boot, I'm pretty sure it's earthed properly. I checked the nut that bolts into the boot and pushed in the connections before re-tightening them both again.

I've got full electrics (pretty sure I had them earlier today too), but still the single click when I turn over.

Will try the solenoid tommorow from the moke and see if that gets it going. thanks all.

From memory, this morning I turned it over, got the raspy noise (you hear it in carparks sometimes, dunno what causes it but people usually get embarassed like they've done something wrong when their car makes the noise starting up) i'd been getting on and off the last few days. Seemed to be completely random and car would start eventually if I randomly waited long enough.

So I figured I'd change the starter motor. The one in it looks old as and the spare one I had was working when I took it out of the moke.

Did that and all I got were clicks. Decided to change the coil too, for what I thought was error testing, but turns out it wasn't neccesary :/.

After I did that I did get a very slow turn over of the starter, but a few turn overs and I was back to clicks again. I put in the old coil and realised what time it was so I packed up, posted quckly here and headed to work.

The car didn't come with a battery so 2 days ago I went and got one for it new so I'm pretty sure it's not the batt.

edit: just reading over that, seems to be pretty incosistant behaviour, I'm guessing it might be a loose connection on the solenoid block thing that all the wires go into maybe? I hate stupid random problems like this, give me a clear cut one anyday .

i had the same prob

Check if the engine will turn by rocking the car (or try turning the fan) if it doesn't it probably is what happens to mine, the starter jams. to fix it put the car in gear(3rd) with the hand break off and rock the car back and forth(sometimes quite hard) until you hear a click. it then should be fine.

when i got my car it had a faulty regulator
which means that even after you pull the key out, the batts still engaged
so second day i got the car, second day i got the new batt
it wouldnt start: weak batt which eventually died out and eventuated in a simple click
brought the batt to shop they recharged it i was
i had to turn the batt off everytime i left the car

still think its batt if starter is working, sorry cant think of anything else

this is good stuff to learn especially amongst us mini owners, i had the same problem when my morris 1100(now at a scrapmetalist's place or maybe even squished down into a washing machine or somethin)yeh besides the point , i had it sitting in the driveway 4 ages , unregistered , and it had starting problems.

there also could be rust or scale on the shaft which the cog thingy runs on so it might be jamed in place and i know the noise like mettle grating oh crap i know what it is the ring gear on the flywheel is stuffed so the coggy thing cant engage properly
