Post subject:  Recognise these pistons and... carbon removal.
A bit hard to guess but does anyone recognise this make of piston from the photo below? They are not an arc dish rather a straight taper to a flat dish. At a smidge over 72mm I am assuming this makes it 60thou over. Do we calculate the capacity including the chamber and dish or the stroke capacity?

Also can anyone suggest a good carbon removal strategy. I'd like to clean off the pistons before I put the head back.

I will get it rebuilt at a later date but for now just need it back on the road.

A can of coke over a couple of days will work well.

im sure there will be more carbon in the ring lands also, it looks pretty average, why was th head removed?

ALC ? i havn`t heard of ALC :-)
But yes ACL (repco) are very good value for money if that`s what you mean?

Head gasket was leaking into the number 2 cylinder and blowing steam.

The head is getting rebuilt at the moment.

The rest will get a rebuild in the future but for now I will just put it back together after cleaning the carbon out.

And I wont be putting a can of coke anywhere near the sleeves.

I was actually refering to quality but by the sounds of it they are still a reasonable piston, good to know.

Can you still get ACL pistons new? Their piston plant in Melbourne got sold to Mahle to make GMH's pistons only, I heard. Then recently I heard Mahle had closed it and taken the equipment to Germany or somewhere.

toto & riteway & ACL were the cheapest for years but havn`t seen them avaliable for a long while now,,, not that i was looking :-)

do all Cylinders look the same condition?

if your not going to rebuild it i would wipe out and blow out as much as you can. thought with that amount of carbon there i would say its going to need a rebuild in the near future..

sorry,,, but for everyone else,,, there`s a tiny patch where the "slight" blow started, (on the right side of the left cyl in the pic) then it`s progressed & it was actually always going to happen cause you can see the "Narrowing" of the surface in the gasket mark yeah?,,,

& Mattys seen it before most have,,, but i caught that from Mattys little cute pick-up > :-)

Yep head gasket remnants - no crack. Otherwise I would be looking for a replacement and not rebuilding the head. Will be cleaning up this weekend and will post some photos of a relatively shiny block. Now about that carbon removal strategy.. Any further suggestions?

Aside from being covered in gunk it all looks ok. The sleeves are pretty tidy atm so that's why I am happy to leave it. I have talked about doing the motor with Matt prior to this and one of these days I'll get around to it.

Right now I just need to get it back in running order so the family can use the second car again. Besides which I am getting withdrawal symptoms.

So given some time this weekend it is LH engine mount getting replaced and the top of the block and cylinders getting cleaned up.
