Post subject:  Identifying a motor

A bloke at work says he has an old english motor under his house and wants to get rid of it. He has described it as:

- an east-west 4 cylinder engine
- Automatic - shifter has P,N,R,1,2,3,4,D (drive at the bottom). Gearbox in the sump
- it has "1000" lettering on the block
-still turns over by hand

To me it sounds like a 998 auto, but I don't know about the Auto selectors. Did they have 4 gears? was D at the bottom?

What would it be out of?

Cheers
Ryan

It's a late 998 Rover auto, the MiniMatic ones here had no `P' position and were marked R N 1 2 3 4 D
