Post subject:  Engine will not run under load

Hi all

I took my mini for a drive to tradeschool this morning. About a 30min trip. It ran fine bar a little coughing due to being cold. Got back in it and left school drove about 5 km down hill and it just died. I pulled off to the side of the road. I could restart it and it would idle and free rev fine.

Take off into traffic by the time I get into 2nd gear it dies in the ass again.

It was getting dark and the gosh darn thing is so easy to steal so I put it on a flat bed and brought it home.

I pulled the carby off, pulled the jet out, the fuel bowl off checked the needle and seat

The plugs were not wet with fuel and clean. Maybe one of them had a slight reddish tinge.

There was no obvious electircal issues, I have a pulsar dizzy.

It was raining today.

The engine generally does not like to be idled for long periods as it fouls plugs and runs like skirt.

the dashpot had oil in it.

I am thinking water in the fuel?

I ran the fuel line in a bottle for about a litter or so and could not see any obvious water.....

Any ideas fellow ausmini people?

Take dizzy cap off. Spray it inside and out with WD40. Wipe dry with a tissue inside and out.
Spray it lightly inside again, refit.
Also, check for loose or frayed wires on the coil. I use ring terminals there now, not those damned spade lugs that can get loose with vibration.

I'd be guessing your ignition coil would be shagged, particularly showing up under load. But there are smarter folks here than me who might suggest other ideas.

Could be the distributor rotor? or condenser?
What plugs are you using? may need to be a bit hotter if they are carboning up?

He said he has a Pulsar dizzy (electronic).
If these things fail in the module they don't usually run at all.
 Check the plug lead resistances? Bin them if over 5K ohm.

Mechanical pump? check your fuel pump diaphram

Following DrMini's run through of the dizzy & wires to the coil (those spade terminals are a bugger for coming loose!) I'd then suspect the coil as being on the way out.

Doesn't sound like a fuel issue.

Sounds like what happened to me when my fuel float valve unscrewed itself and wouldn't let enough fuel In...idled fine then tried to take off and would die.

Don't ask how long it took to work that issue out

thanks for your responses. The leads are newish but will check Ohms. Unfortunatly I left it for a couple of days before I pulled the cap off. there was a small amount of moisture around the bottom of the dizzy.

I spray some contact cleaner in the dizzy, replace the cap and cap seals and put some denzo tape around the joint in the cap...

It was the first long trip I have taken it on so I was leading towards some crap in the tank causing dramas...... I dont think thats the issue.

It was also the first time I have driven it in the rain so any obvious dizzy leaks would not be obvious... until now.

I will check all the electrical connections in due course.

thanks heaps for your help

I'm with Pete...classic dying coil symptom. BTDT.

Although, I would try to borrow a known good one before springing for a replacement.

Cheers, Ian
