When you just buy a steering wheel off eBay, say like this

That has no splines or boss etc, how on earth do you fit it to your mini?

You will need to find the Boss kit. The seller has a few autotechnica ones for sale, it might be worth dropping the question.

There are various boss kits available for a Mini depending on the wheel. Eg SAAS, Mountney, MotaLita are all different screws and PCD.

The Autotechnica bosses have a few sets of holes I think.

Which component is the mini specific part? Does the boss have the spline for the mini column?

Ie. if I ask the seller does he have a boss to suit a 1975 mini he will probably have no idea... So are these things pretty universal?

Sorry for the questions, a new steering wheel is the only part of the car I have literally not even an ounce of knowledge about haha

The mini steering columns themselves did not change their spline in the period of their manufacture in Australia. If you ask for a steering wheel boss to suit both a Mini, and the wheel you are buying, then you will have the solution.

The steering wheel boss kit has the female spline to match your column, as well as the holes drilled to suit your wheel.

He has two for sale that will fit a mini he says, drop him the question.

Yeah the price of the boss alone turned me off....

I would prefer a proper ADR approved nice wheel, say a motolita.

This one is cheaper and fits a few different wheel makers as Doc suggested , here's what they fit The boss kit has two sets of drilled holes so it suits just about every brand of steering wheel such as Momo, Personal, Autotecnica, Isotta, SAAS etc.

Ah that's great!
How would one know if the wheel was ADR approved? A sticker/piece of paper that the rego person or cop would want to check?

Also I am open to correction but I remember reading somewhere that if your car was delivered with a padded steering wheel (post 71 when the rules came about) then it can only be replaced with a padded steering wheel.

If you're up for a but of hunting and swapping replies with sellers/authorities, some of the later mg sports steering wheels look pretty nice and may have padded centres.

One thing to keep in mind as well when looking at steering wheels and boss kits is how far they stick out.

Some boss kits sit out from the column a lot bringing the wheel closer to you, and you can get wheels with different offsets.

So while it doesn't really matter all that much, you can choose the right gear to give you the position you want the wheel to be. Combine that with changing the column height and seat position and it can be a big change.
