Post subject:  Interior reupholstery!

Hi all,

Just trying to get an idea for when the time comes. Recently got a quote from a few guys and they were asking $5k including material. Is that a lot? Is it better/cheaper to buy it yourself (I noticed minisport Aus do a kit for the door cards and carpet) and get someone to fit it? It's for a mk2 S, so it's the loop pile carpet, seats need redoing etc. uncharted territory for me so any advice would be greatly appreciated! And if anyone can recommend someone that would also be appreciated!

Cheers
Steve

5k sounds a bit high, but depends on what you asked for.
I have never had any success with just buying trim kits from the mini shops.

As a former motor trimmer, $5k sounds about right for a quality job, but as michaelb says it depends on what you have asked for.

Replicating the original trim can often be much more expensive than a custom job, as the cost of quality replica materials can be horrendous and the tooling to recreate welded seams etc can be very expensive considering how little they are used.

As already said depends to what extent. I paid $5K for my countryman which was custom made at newton commercial and professionally fitted. That was a complete interior, everything to rebuild the seats, carpets, door cards, roof lining and sun visors and a few other custom pieces the South African cars had.

How did you go working with newtons to re create the pieces they were not familiar with. Cheers

I sent them pics of the old stuff. Seats had more welds/rows in them than Uk versions. Other bits I just got the vinyl for and had the trimmer cover the door pockets and rear wheel arches. They were great to deal with.
