Hi all

I'd like to know if the firewall insulation/padding is necessary in the engine bay? Mine is torn in places, and cut to fit around things and looks horrible. However in some photos of members restored cars or cars on the "for sale" sites, the is no insulation/padding.

Is it just a noise reduction thing, or does it serve another purpose?

Thanks.

Just noise reduction. Most of mine have never had it.

If its only there for noise reduction, I was thinking of just ripping it out completely. See how it goes without it for a while, and if I'm not happy, then I'll put something new in.

I took it out then glued a layer of pretend dynamat on the inside of the firewall.
I then put another piece of this stuff across the front, but cut short enough that it's easy to remove for access to the speedo etc.

Thanks guys. I think I'll rip it out and see what difference it makes. If I need something back in there, I'll look into the fake dynamat stuff.

I noticed a marked reduction in fumes entering the cabin when I put some on.

Yeah I'm getting a lot of fumes in mine. Possibly the insulation that is currently there no longer works to its full potential.

I made sure it sealed around the speedo cable really well and that helped a lot.

I think it also helps to protect the rear of the instrument cluster, the fusebox, and the wiring harness (in a round nose) from the elements (dust, rain, dew, fumes). Also to directs any rainwater away from the speedo opening if it should overflow from the rear bonnet gutter.

Also provides a physical barrier between lots of live electrics and fuel at the carbie, esp in an accident where the motor may be pushed against the area of the speedo opening.

OK so in the interest of safety, I guess it's better to have something there. I may just need to replace what is currently there.

Most minis had something there when they were new (all the ones I had did). I now use a piece of multilayer felt covered by Holden ute tonneau cover (which quite accurately matches the original S blanket vinyl). You do not want to glue anything to the firewall - there are too many reasons you need to remove it for access.

You can add more insulation to the inside as well - again, anything permanently attached is not a good idea.

The blanket will insulate against noise, fumes etc.

Some is good, more is better...

Cheers, Ian
