Hi, I have a NZ new 1967 Aus Assembled Cooper S which i'm currently restoring. The Numbers are 9/F/Sa/Y###### and YKG2S2######. Wiper motor is 5/67. The car has wind down windows and the Australian boot (small number plate) and 8 drain holes on roof gutter. However the rear boot tray mounts are mounted by rivets (on back seat wall) and the hydrolastic piping is not enclosed as I thought all Aus made coopers were. Can anyone clarify if this is indeed an Australian built shell or a complete CKD car shipped complete from the UK and assembled in Aus? |

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like an Oz bodyshell. Up until mid 1967? The hydro pipes on an S or Deluxe ran along the bottom of the (early) floor with a little protector plate each end. From then on the Oz floors all got the 2 channels pressed in them as you described. |

Thanks for the info DrMini. It is a bit hard to tell exactly what the floor pan originally looked like as very dented from a hard life of rallying in the south island of NZ. RRRR (raced, rallyed, rolled & rooted...) A past owner had run the hydrolastic lines through the inside of the car for protection when rallying I think. Did the boot shelf brackets mounted on the rear seat wall also become welded instead of riveted at the same time? |

I have been told some cars had the brackets rivetted and some were spotwelded, I have no idea of dates. I sold our 1968 S back in 1983... |

After the YKG2S2 how many digits? You seem to infer 6. Unless the oz exports were numbered differently the number should only be in the thousands. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free |

For those dates i think should be around car no 2800 - 3000. Eng no somewhere around the 45000 mark if original motor. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free |

Kind of intriguing as to why an Aus car would be here NZ new. Private import I guess? How much do you know about the registration history? If it's been raced, I'm guessing not much? |

Remember we're talking about BMC here, why would they take the most cost effective/efficient route?! |

BMC shipped a lot of Oz built Minis to NZ- Mini K, Cooper S, Clubby GT. Not sure about Mini Deluxe. Some cars were badged Austin instead of Morris. |

This car was sold new in Christchurch in Aug '67. It still has the plate on firewall with matching no's stamped in engine block. Also stamped 4 digits below firewall plate. However people in NZ are claiming the car has been "re-shelled" as doesn't have a true Australian built body. It has 8 drilled holes in the gutters, drip strip on sides of gutters above doors, riveted mounting brackets for boot tray and the english style hydrolastic pipe setup under car (exposed pipes) |

What side do the wipers park on? Is the panel in front of the windscreen flat or are there indentations (a small well) where the two drive cogs for the wiper rack exit? |

Wiper motor is dated 5/67 (feb 67?) and wipers park to the right (drivers side) |

In mid 68 the way the wipers park changed also which is why winabby was asking about that. From every thing you have said it sounds correct for aus car for that period. You may also like to check the top of the radiator shroud. Unless replaced through accident repair it should also have a 4 digit body number and a code to indicate Cooper S. usually buried under many layers of paint because it was stamped into the raw shell prior to paint.
