I have got 10 days before the rego runs out, :x

I am trying to get my car registered with club plates and have come across a few hurdles
I have to prove what month my car was manufactured to qualify for acceptance
The year is not a problem (1988) but they must know the month of manufacture to qualify

Rover Mini,

VIN Number ....SAXXL2S1S21375530
COMMISSION Number...SAXXL2S1S21375530

Engine Number....12A2DF75287985

Any help greatly appreciated,
Ps, I have checked the dates on the boot lock but this is inconclusive.

Send a PM to John Sneddon. He's working on a project that should have the information you are seeking. :)

The VIN number is exactly as it appears on the plate

There is a plate on the front support right next to the bonnet locking mechanism and its
spot welded on and painted over and the numbers are,

B20S 768501A

here is an exerpt from my best reply so far.

That's weird. Your car was born with Left Hand Drive and possibly in 1985!

SAXXL2S1S21375530

SAX = MG-Rover

L = 998cc

2S = 2 door sedan

1 = Roundnose body

S = LHD Mayfair specification

2 = 1985 model year

1 = LHD

1375530 = build number

It's possible the car was sold new in Europe and was exported to Japan at three years old, hence the 1988 on the paperwork.

For a while in the 80's there was a craze to have LHD cars in Japan. People paid extra to buy LHD European spec cars.

I really need to tie it down to a specific month, if that possible.

I've been through the same problem with identifying my rover.
Records and chassis decoders found on the internet don't apply to 80s cars, and the numbers are veigue in that they will tell the vehicle build series but not the exact build date. The only way I found to get an exact date was to contact the British Motor Archive with the car and body numbers, and have them tell me when it was built. Cost me $60, but without the documentation they sent me I was otherwise unable to prove my cars age.

Your car won't be an 85 model - it was built about 40,000 cars (if the numbers are sequential) after mine (mid 87). Records I've seen indicate they only built around 35000 cars a year in the late 80s.
Your car is probably 25 years old, but only just if it is.

My final guess: your car built in 1988, somewhere between march and august.
:D

Thanks Harley, thats exaxctly where I hit the brick wall, and for your information have a look at the Lock on the boot as it may contain the week and year of your cars build, you may have to take it off and give it a light rub with paper to bring up the numbers, but its something I found out during this investigation.

I may have to just suck it up and pay another years rego, and try again in January, so anyway I should be able to use the rego to set up the club plates and rego when I can and may even come out with a little cash left over.... its just frustrating at the moment.

Seems a lot of grief, just to get a set of Club plates on it.. who inspects it, the club? or Vicroads?
I had none of this runaround when I put the wasaMatic on club plates last month in NSW (not with the MCC though). 8)

You get year problems because of the Japanese date system. People get the date conversion wrong on the paperwork all the time. If the car has been into and out if Japan it has had two chances to get stuffed up.

Is your Vin. plate marked B L Cars LTD or Rover cars, I was told there was a definite date they changed that may narrow it down for you. Mine is marked B L Cars Limited & was told it was 1984 or 1985 car number 0106349.

Good luck,

Ash.

They only make you jump through the hoops if you're trying to register a 25 year old car.
Think of it this way - if a car is built dec 31 1988 and you try to register it jan 1, 2013, then its only 24 years old.
They only want proof in the crossover year.

If the month of the build plate is not on the vehicle, then it should default to January of that year.

I Like Monaco's way of thinking, but that would be in a perfect world.

No Kev, its the Vic Mini Club, they are only trying to do the right thing, for the benefit of all concerned and I fully agree with that,

My problem is that my rego is due and I can go on Club plates in 12 weeks, I was just hoping to save $500 and go onto club plates now, if the car was built between Jan and September, 1988 that all would be fine, I just need to prove that to the registrar... :x
