Was on my way to work this morning and I noticed a drop in power, some backfiring on accelleration, and poor idle. The same symptoms as when one of the plugs go. I've checked the plugs - they're fine. In checking the leads taking them off one at a time the second one from the left is the only one that doesn't have a further effect, so I assume this is the case. Is there anything else I should check before buying a new cap'n'leads (mine's all one piece)? |

How do you know that the spark plug is "fine"? is the plug wet when you take it out?(ie. fuel not burnt) I have at least 3 plugs here that "look fine" but in fact don't spark at all. Do this, with the car running, unplug the lead to number 3 cylinder. Hold the lead closer to the spark plug (almost plugged in but not touching yet). there should be a spark arcing to the the plug (makng a tick tick tick sound). If no spark then it's your leads, if spark then its the plug... How come your cap is one piece with the leads??? that sucks! if you replace the cap then get an independant one with leads separate, and buy Bosch leads ![]() |

You may also have a burnt out valve. They will give the same result as you have asked about. |

There's a spark firing to the plug so I will try another new plug......hope it's not a valve ![]() |

I'll double check the points in the morning. I did have another thought that it could be the head gasket too ![]() |

Does your cap have plug leads that all go in from the one side? If it does, turn it over and you will see little screws that poke up and hole the leads in. The screws are in the middle of the brass contacts. Undo the screw and slip the lead out. You will need plug leads the same size to fit back in. |

I think he has sussed out that it isn't the lead as he has a spark to number 3... (read above). I hope it isn't a head gasket, but more so I hope it aint a valve! ![]() |
