Post subject: | Battery Question... |
Since I have had the yellow leyland I have been plagued by alternator and battery problems. When I received the car the battery was in the negative earth position (negative terminal to earth) and there it has stayed. The other night when putting the battery back in, I put it in the wrong way. When I went to connect it up I had connected the positive to the earth and was hooking the negative when there was a large flash. I realised what I had done and changed it back. ![]() When I put it back on the correct way there was no flash or anything. Is this normal? Edit: It is still drivable and ok. |

Simon, Normally the car is negative earth if it has an alternator fitted. Its a lot easier if the car is neg earth i.e.when fitting acessories such as a radio. I changed my 66 deluxe from pos to neg earth when I first bought it,it only takes a few minutes. For anyone thats interested here are the instructions from minimania site... www.minimania.com/articlev.cfm?displayi ... ormation&c Felix |

If you hook it up back to front, the alternator diodes all conduct to ground and you get a BIG short. Effect on wiring is not pretty....! |

I'll say... I put the battery in backwards once and fried the whole lot, including alternator, starter solenoid, ALL the fuses. It put it in backwards because I wasn't paying attention to the terminals. The newer battery I had bought had the electrodes on the opposite side of the battery, so I rotated the battery around until it was the way before (towards the lefthand side on the top). Little did I know that now the electrodes were back to front... LOL! "What's that smoke coming from? JESUS $&@*#*@ CHRISTOPHER!!! MY CAR!!!" |
