Post subject:  strange engine issue

To start with I have a 1990 Rover Cooper, 1275cc, A+, Hif4 1 3/4" carby engine.
So for a fair while (months and months) my accelrator has been sticky and "firm" to press down and my engine starts to brake down/splutter and loose power between 4500 5000rpm, definatly no more than 5k. I assumed the issue was simply poor/out of tune due to the fact I havn't tuned the engine for a couple of years.
However I gave the engine a de-grease and a pressure wash on the weekend, just simply sprayed the engine and carby with the pressure washer. After that I can now confinently take the car up to 6000rpm without and spluttering or carrying on from the engine and the acclerator has also become much smoother again.
So can anyone think why a degrease and a pressure wash could have caused such an improvment :?:

accelerator cable? sticky butterfly/ we normally get really peeved when the thing runs poorly for no good explanation -- it is karma - this is running better for no good explanation

It maybe the butterfly sticking and not letting enough fuel though

Probably road crud on the dizzy cap and coil was causing crossfiring. Now it's clean there, all good!

Yes. Or a 123 electronic dizzy, or a Pulsar one, any dizzy, electronic or otherwise.
You have a dizzy cap and rotor; road dust + oil + water builds up on the outside of the cap and the H/T lead sparks can track across it.
 Lift the bonnet in the dark after a run in the rain and have a look, you might be amazed..

I spray and wipe the dizzy cap and coil top with WD40 about every 6 months.

My money is with DrMini. I Had a holden 253, the dissy was buried on the firewall and it was a bugger to work on but it always kept clean and dry.

Kennomini I think it's time to take the leads and cap off the dissy at inspect/clean/replace. Also check your accelerator cable, linkages etc on your carb.

My car was running fine. Before Rylston this year I took my pulsar dissy cap off to inspect and found about half a kilo of carbon build up on the cap and rotor. Cleaned that up and hey hey! runs even better
