Hi all,

I have a couple of sets of the shallow offset contessas sitting in wait and decided to spruce a set up..... From this

Image
Then had the centres soda blasted, to get back to a clean surface and then hand painted on a 2 pak expoxy black, I did mask the outer rim for blasting and painting but you can get it perfect!
Then took then to the professionals for a polish down to 3000 grit, the also too the rim lip back to a good finish and highlighted the step from silver rim to black. Guy at polish could believe how strong the paint was, he thought they were powder coated!

Hope you like

They look awesome, what'd the pro's charge you to polish them? (only two wheels correct?).

Perth wheel repairs in East cannington polished them up at $30 bucks a rim and there were 4!

It's not a cheap thing but it takes a lot of elbow grease to get them that shiny and by the time you buy all the bits etc you would probably spend just as much....

Looks good. 8)

I sprayed mine with VHT quickcoat gloss black acrylic spray cans, then hand polished them with Mothers mag wheel polish.

Hey Doc,
Did you sandblast them before you sprayed them black?

Nope, I paint stripped them with Bunnings `Digger' stripper.. Then I machined off any gutter rash from the outer rim edge and wet sanded them in the lathe at work. With 240>600>1200 paper.
Then I masked the rims up, sprayed the centres with etch prime, then 6 coats of black, finally I hand polished the outer rim with Mothers polish.

Didn't take me long, all it cost was 1L of stripper, 1 spray can of epoxy etch primer, 2 cans VHT `quickcoat' gloss black, and some wet & dry paper. 8)

[edit] The Contessa nuts shown are custom S/S ones, from TheMiniMan. I doubt he has any left, but you could ask him nice..

You're a champ Doc. I've been scratching my head as I got quotes to sandblast, paint n polish and got little change out of $150 each!!
So now.....Paint Stripper, Etch Primer, Black gloss n a bit of elbow grease. I'm on to it!
Cheers again.

I used this method and it came up great. Just remember to wash the paint stripper off thoroughly. Wash it again after that.

I also painted mine over the top with clear coat gloss

One of the wheels I did (unused, NOS) had clear all over it, it had gone patchy and yellowed. After the trouble I had stripping it off, No way would I put clear over them... I just give the outer rims a quick polish with Mothers mag polish every 6 months or so. The other set I did 3 years ago still look like new.

Cheers Boys,
Bought the paint stipper today. I'll attempt to do a few before and after pics.
