Post subject:  What size screw / thread is door latches?

Greetings All.
Put the doors back on the project today (yahoo!)
'63 Cooper.

There are two c/sunk screws that hold the nylon wedge to the door. Found those srews. However, there are also two (bit shorter) that hold the steel cup that the nylon wedged slides into (on the "B" pillar)

I went to the local hardware, thinking they may be UNF. He rattled off some other thread name.

Does anyone know what thread these c/sunk screws are?

Thanks
Alex.

Are these screws about 0.125" in diameter?

5-40 UNF is the thread for this diameter. Take a look at the thread listing here:

You need to go to a real nut & bolt shop (ie. a fastener specialist), not Bunnings etc.

In a bind, the hobby shops specializing in actual hobbies, not toys, sell a lot of these small screws and taps. usually found in the accessory screw packs.

Greetings Again.

Had a look at UK site and the thread is 6-32. They list it for the nylon buffer and metal part on the B pillar. I have ordered a packet of 100 S/Steel from Coventry Fasteners in Adelaide.

Desciption on parts site:
Special 6/32" UNC countersunk Pozidrive head screw 3/4" total length for holding the white nylon door buffer 14A6833.

Cheers
Alex.

So are they 5-44, or 6-32?

Yeah, sorry for the bum steer. The threads used around the car for metal thread screws are usually the 5-44.

The door nylon mounts use the 6-32 however. I pulled a screw from the door and got the same thread count. I counted 20 threads over 5/8 length so (8/5)x20=32 TPI

It might be the thin adjustable metal strap which requires the coarse thread.

Might be a bit late for this information but I only just noticed this thread.

According to the Mini Series parts book PUB1056M following are the part numbers for the various screws on the door and B pillar for a Mini Cooper (and Morris 850):

CMZ308 - for the zinc diecast striker plate
CMZ212 - for the nylon buffer and retaining plate
CMZ204 - for the buffer plate (u-shaped steel to house nylon buffer)

According to the BMC Standards book:

CMZ means it's a zinc plated recessed countersunk-head screw - unified

204 is No. 6 and 1/4" long
212 is No. 6 and 3/4" long
308 is No. 10 and 1/2" long

No. 6 is UNC, 32 tpi, .138 nominal diameter
No. 10 is UNF, 32 tpi, .190" nominal diameter

Winabbey.

Spot on.

6-32 UNC for the nylon and metal cup guide it goes into.
They're only about 12c ea, but they come boxed in 100.

And the B Pillar latch are bigger screws.

Alex.

Thread hi-jack

Not on the door, but how about the roto dip panel? Anyone know what size screw is used to hold the center insert into this panel on clubmans (the bit the wiring loom goes through)

Panel in question is here http://www.minispares.com/catalogues/classic/Classic~Body~Parts~Manual/Bodywork/Saloon~and~Front~Ends.aspx?3~23~149 though the insert is not mentioned???

cheers,

CJ
