i have several smiths temp guages. i have tried two of them and they both read the same thing, they have 2 wires coming off the back one goes directly to the sender in the head the other to the regulator on the back of the speedo which cuts the volts down.....the problem i have is the guages both of them only go up to 1 quarter of the way, sometimes a lil more but not much but if i earth the wire that goes to the sender it sends the needle moving up to hot. i have been driving this motor it was a brand new rebuilt motor i fear now i may have wrecked it as i was going off the temp guage which was way inaccurate. i boiled the motor and blew a head gasket have replaced both radiator and head gasket but the temp guage still resads the same.

Its your temp sender mate. you have to mate them up. there is a tread on here regarding what sender goes with each. Mine sits on 1/4 but mine runs a 5 speed box, and a minispares 2core. and after the run with the mini club a few months back, I put my infra red on it and it said 67deg C.
So have a search, and find which coloured one will suit your gauge :-)

Have you tried another voltage regulator?

Yes the one i had on before the one that's on now showed a similar reading. I do however know that this regulator is cutting down the volts because my circuit light is duller when the wires connected to the regulator. I have ordered a new temp sender from karkraft hopefully it will be here tomorrow
