Hi all

In the last couple of days my mini has been randomly stalling/cutting out. The first time it happened I thought the car was just cold because it happened about 5 minis after I started it.
However this morning I got from Caroline Springs to Port Melbourne without a hitch until I was 50m from work and then it died.

It restarts fine straight away, but I'm wondering what could be causing this.

Thanks

hard to diagnose, give us the scenario when it will do it..

IE

putting the clutch in when pulling up to the lights
driving at constant speed (what RPM)

etc. etc.

ooh now you've got me thinking. both times was low speed.

1st was coming up to a speedhump maybe doing 20-30.

2nd time was doing about the same speed, maybe less, had finished braking for a round-a-bout and was accelerating to enter.

Both times would have been in 2nd gear i reckon. If i was in 3rd, i might of had the clutch in.

righto, next thing is to make it repeatable - figure out how to MAKE it happen

Thanks Simon. I'll let you know if it happens and how while driving home tonight. Otherwise if I get a chance I'll take it out on the weekend.

I'm hoping to attend the Classic Display at Flemington on Sunday.

Check you coil wires, one loose wire gave me similar issues a few years ago, incidentally usually when accelerating in 2nd gear as well.

Its not just when you tap the brakes?

Ok so I managed to repeat the problem multiple times today. Was just driving up and down the pier at work.

In 2nd gear, foot on clutch and rolling rather than accelerate. revs drop away to nothing and it smoothly stalls/cuts out.. take foot slowly off clutch and get a roll start. (or brake and turn key to restart).

If I'm in 2nd and take my foot off clutch and roll, the revs drop (if i let them) and its the normal shaky stall, unless i let the clutch back in.

Does it just sit and idle ok?

You stay it starts ok, and runs ok. Just stalls when stationary or not making the motor rev.....?

Might need idling up a little......

It might be running lean. In fact, it might be running correctly at idle, but leaning out at higher revs if your needle isn't correct. If it's running lean at higher revs, and you suddenly drop the accelerator, it will drop below idle speed, and can stall.

Starts ok, runs ok, sits and idles ok. Only time I can repeat the issue is in 2nd while rolling if I have the clutch in and let the revs drop.

Could be lean or an issue with the needle, but I have no idea what or how to adjust. Due for a service I think.

I would check the following
1. what is the idle rpm set too
2. wires to coil
3. are the battery terminals tight
4. are wires tights on to the generator
5. are the wires tight on the solenoid
6. is the dizzy tight in its holder
7. is the dizzy cap cliped in and in good condition
8. float level
9. is the fuel delivery adequate

Q. is it a bog standard 850 and have you played with it at all before the issue started.

hope this helps

As far as I know its a standard 998 (not the original). I haven't touched it as I don't know what I'm doing. I send it to the specialist for these sorts of things.

Yes My mini used to do this. I would drive on a trip somewhere, and then when I would stop at say traffic lights or something it would stall on me.

So I pushed and proded a few connections last night and I think it might have done the trick. Probably a loose conection somewhere as it seemed to run fine this morning with no issues.

I have it booked with Link on monday for a service anyway.
